Magellan RoadMate 1220 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator

I've never owned a GPS before but thought for less than $100, I would give this one a shot.Likes: Thin, bright screen, volume is good. Says the street name, which I really like - this is something that you don't always find in lower end GPS. It has been accurate each time I have used it with no crazy u-turns or anything else like that.One thing I'm not crazy about: The use of the features is not always clear to me and I find it a little confusing.Generally really pleased with this purchase - all my friends who spent $$$$$ on GPS can't believe this has so much function for so little money.

I purchased this after returning a similar Nextar unit that would not boot properly. While the Magellan does not have the MP3 and picture viewing capabilities that the Nextar unit did it does have over 6 million POI's where the Nextar had just 1 million or so. Frankly, I have an MP3 player already so why do I need one in my GPS.The speaker seems a little fuzzy when set at the higher volume level but it is still understandable. Excellent value for the $80.00 or so I paid for it.

I have it for more than a year, and I had several road trips during last year. I can't say that it is the best, because it made mistakes few times, but it is good enough! In my opinion, one of the advantages of it is that it does not talk a lot, and I like it. the previous GPS I had before, used to repeat "recalculating", "turn left- turn right" a lot and it freaked me up! But this one is nice, she talkes less!!!

This is the second time I have purchased this GPS (the first GPS is no longer with us because of my own clumsiness). The reason I chose to order the same GPS again is because I love this GPS! It has a bunch of great features perfect for anyone who just wants to drive in the U.S. It's easy to navigate through the millions of Points of Interest, which makes learning where everything is around your current area really easy. It's wonderful for a student who has gone away to school and needs to learn where everything is around their area (which is what I have used mine for).Also, if you talk to customer service up to 30 days after you order this from Amazon, they will give you the latest map update free! They also have a new software update that makes the GPS menu look sleeker and even easier to navigate. The only catch is that you will need a USB cable from your computer to the GPS to install the updates, and that cable does not come with the GPS.Also, if you need a case, this one works perfectly!  Case Logic GPSP-1 Professional GPS Case for 3.5-Inch Flatscreens All in all, even though this is tagged as one of Magellan's more basic RoadMate GPSs, the number of features it does have outweighs my mothers more expensive Garmin by a landslide. It's a great GPS!

This piece of crap refused to acquire a satellite signal from the moment it came out of the box = worthless!

It works very well. The only objection I have is that the suction does not work. I attached it to the window and at first it stayed on but it eventually fell off and anytime I put it back, it fell off within a matter of minutes. They supplied a plate to attach to the dashboard, which I did, but the suction would not hold on that either. I tried cleaning it with alcohol but it did no good.

As someone who is not tech savvy, I found this GPS easy to use. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because the turn by turn directions do not stay on the screen. You have to keep pulling it up, or wait for the system to tell you when your next turn is imminent.

I wanted to get a basic easy to use unit for my wife and selected this item after checking reviews. We are very pleased with this model and amazed with all the information available besides basic maps; e.g. local sites, restaurants, gas stations. The unit also instantly recalculates the route if you don't take a turn. It takes some practice to learn how to help setup a route, such as taking a bypass instead of the shorter direct interstate route. But this is a very helpful unit to have when visiting a new place as you can go wandering and then always get back to where you started. It doesn't do fancy things like traffic updates and routing around traffic jams, but we were not looking for those features. Highly recommended for a basic unit. Very good value!
