Really Works!
This thing really works! It has greatly improved my athletic performance while biking, running, and weightlifting. It has also helped improve my singing abilities. I was a little skeptical at first, but I can say that this product legitimately works. One caveat. I am a healthy, fit, 24 year-old man who exercises regularly and I had to start off using this at the absolute lowest possible settings. After some work I could begin to increase the settings. If you are not very fit, you should definitely purchase one of the starter models before moving on to this.

Quite expensive for what it is
Quite expensive for what it is. I agree it can give you inhalation resistance and exhalation resistance but the real benefits come from exhalation resistance. I'm no Navy seal (51 years old) and can dial inhalation and exhalation to easy levels for me despite all of the packaging warnings. I might consider breathing in through my nose and exhaling through a soda straw next time. Seems like same effect. Just my thoughts..

Do your research before buying PowerLung
Actually this is a rave review for the PowerLung "Trainer" model, but read on! Based on Amazon's product description and reviews of PowerLung "Sport" I purchased the item without doing further research. When the "Sport" model arrived, I, fortunately, didn't rip open the cellophane wrapper, but carefully read the box info. The "Sport" model is intended for people with fitness levels of "Navy Seals or professional athletes". Not me! I'm 71! Lungs compromised by childhood and exercise induced asthma and living with two heavy smokers for 15 years; however, I row a Concept2 erg about four hours per week and have a VO2 in excess of 50--high aerobic fitness level. Amazon was great about the return. Then I did the research and discovered that (FOOTSTOMPER) THERE ARE FOUR DIFFERENT POWERLUNG MODELS. Their difficulty levels have very little overlap. If you read many reviews you'll see that some folks are overwhelmed by the difficulty of the PowerLung model they've purchased. Like me, they bought the wrong model. After doing my homework, I chose the PowerLung "Trainer", have used it for about three weeks and couldn't be more pleased with it. The device is mostly plastic and probably produced for about $10, but it's priceless to me. I use it religiously two or three times each day. It has two analog controls and I have already moved from near the low resistance end to halfway up the difficulty scale. My lungs are completely clear for the first time in memory and yesterday I rowed a personal best interval workout on my Concept2. Caveat emptor: Amazon seems to have two different prices for the "Trainer" model today--$83 & $109. I paid $106 about three weeks ago. Amazon and PowerLung have a fantastic, if overpriced, product, but their descriptions fall far short. I hope this prods them to do better.

If you Haven't used one of these before, buy the orange. I would consider myself athletic but this was very difficult to start with. This will work to increase the force of your inspiration and expiration. Whether it will increase lung compacity, I don't know.Pro -- Easy to clean, disassemble, and reassemble.- Difficult. I can't imagine this being too easy for anyone.- Variable setting for inspiration and expiration that can be adjusted independently.Cons- Not much difference between lowest and highest setting. There is a difference but not much.

A legitimate workout.
If your not a competitive athlete in exceptional shape, get a lower strength model. My 19 year old Midshipman and 16 year old competitive swimmer can only use it on its weakest setting. It is a strong diaphragm workout. Never experienced sore diaphragm muscles till I used this.

Tough workout
I am a very athletic asthmatic. I played football in college and ran track in college as well. Joined the military but a gas mask failure brought back my childhood asthma. I have stayed in shape but got tired of the meds. I have been using this for about three weeks. I still hit the weights hard and do 10ks regularly. I wanted to get back down to about a 30minute 10k. After about three weeks of this and then working out i have noticed that my lungs are feeling much better. My goal is to get deep down and strengthen those areas of my lungs that always have inflamation. I am determined to get off of these meds by the end of summer. I'll update in October when I run my next 10k.Note: this model if definately for people that are in really good shape already. I thought mine was broken until I realized that I had to just work even harder. There are two lesser models that I would suggest for people that are in decent shape or not in shape at all and want to get started.

Train Harder. Train Better. Train Stronger.
Using the Powerlung is like using any other piece of exercise equipment. You must be dedicated and start slow and controlled. Remember to follow the instructions and to contract and hold just you do when performing a curl. I leave this out to remind myself to do this... it's a challenge at first, once you start using it you feel great. You know your making strides to improve your performance.I have had difficulty with breathing in heat or hiking, I find my outdoor, in full sun, activities to go smoother with the continued use of the Powerlung. This level "Active Sport" is not for the beginner. I suggest a model that fits your lifestyle and migrate up to the higher levels to ensure you get a full workout and that you are able to see your gains. This is a must have for anyone who wants to train harder, better and stronger.

Great product
I definitely feel the difference. I heard about this product weeks before i bought it the reason i didn't buy it sooner was because of the price and I was scared it wouldn't work. I've now been using it for a few weeks and my running has improved and my breathing is so much different than before! just be careful to buy the sport series unless you are in a High level of Fitness or your gonna waste your money since the lowest level of the SPORT series is very tough!
