Batman 12: City of Bane

Wow
It's incredibly different; it's incredibly intimate. I love this story arc and can't wait to move on.Sucks about Alfred. He's always been the tree who held all the flying crew in his branches. In many many ways he's the heart and strength and understated unconditional love that supports the entire mythos.

An amazing first part
We really get the story in two parts: The first showing the chaos of Gotham under the rule of the villains and the second showing us Bruce and Selina coming together once more and mending their broken relationship. Both pieces compliment each other perfectly and you really couldn't ask for a better Batman volume. It makes me excited to see how part 2 turns out.

Writing is the problem, art is great
The story seems to drag unnecessarily. Batman's dialogue and actions don't fit his character (a problem for a large portion of Tom King's run). The story is also occasionally borrowing from other sources, but handling it poorly. It makes it seem like Tom King is a hack. I've thoroughly enjoyed some of his other work, but his Batman run went from decent, to just not enjoyable. His run has been a mischaracterization and poorly told. The artwork and coloring has been excellent. This gets 2 stars because the awesome art.

The Bane of Bane; The Bat and the Cat
The story is disjointed, which seems to be a modern take on the telling of tales, running form past to present to inform the one of the other and build drama. Tom King does that a bit more than most but his Batman is focused. His intelligence leads the way over brawn and his keen mind make the difference in most encounters. Cat Woman is a singular piece of distinction in this tale of how a strong woman alongside a strong man with a built in trust will win the day. The love story woven through this comeback triumphant is incredible to watch. The plan in coming back is not revealed but the tension is set high and homages to older storylines which left the Bat broken, only to find a will to come back are made real. The advent of Thomas Wayne into this mix is pure genius as we struggle to understand his motivations which may not have been fully developed in Flashpoint are amazing. I have read part two and would highly recommend this to all who enjoy the Bat at his best when meeting not merely one foe, but several...many interesting twists and turns to keep in mind.
