Great for conditioning/aging Irish Whiskeys!
I got into aging whiskeys at home using a kit that came with a small wooden barrel, something we found at a renaissance fair a couple years ago. I found the barrel "wore out" with a few uses. While researching ways to revitalize the barrel or find an alternative, I discovered these oak spirals. I tried several levels of toast and char, and found the Medium Toast to my liking for all the whiskeys I age at home. I've used them to "age" several well-known but affordable Irish whiskeys, and loved the results. The original barrel kit also introduced me to liquor "essences", which you can add to a spirit like plain vodka, or grain alcohol watered to the correct "proof, to make your own version of other spirits. The essences are available on Amazon. Using those essences, alcohol, and these spirals, I've also created our own conditioned "whiskeys" in Irish Barley, Dublin, and Poitin styles, as the essence maker refers to them. I can't call them Irish Whiskeys, as they aren't made in Ireland, but they sure make a fine replacement. I enjoy the process of making them, varying the ingredients, the amounts, and the time spent aging to change the final characteristics and flavor to my liking. I highly recommend these Oak Spirals!

Longer than expected
They work well but had to break them apart to fit into quart jars for again but no big deal. Started giving the moonshine color within hours of insertion

Watery taste and affected ABV
Dunno what happened, but after 3 months I took it out and the ABV had dropped from 110 to 80 and tastes very watery. had same batch on toasted staves and this did not happen. It's like the spirals absorbed the alcohol.

The best for adding barrel characteristics to your wine
Available in different toast levels and much easier and neater to use than oak dust. I tie them together with fishing line and suspend in the wine. Can be used with older oak barrels, demijohns and stainless steel barrels. With practice, you can find the right combination of time and number of spirals to volume of wine to get the desired oak nose, flavor and tannin in your wine. Worth the price.
