I bought this as a gift and was immediately disappointed with the size if the book (6" X 6"). The index is hard to read lots of info very small print. The pictures are nice and the recipes include sweet and savory dishes. The front cover is torn and a bit bent at the top which normally would be a non issue but for a gift I was not pleased to see. Book arrived unwrapped in box loose with little cushioning.

The 500 pies and tarts provides 125 recipes for a variety of desserts from everyday use to special occasions. Each of the 125 recipes has four minor variations that tweak the item into a different version by adding a new flavor profile. Overall it is an average cookbook but for those who are skilled in baking like my wife it provides base recipes that can then be used to make their own variations while using this as a widespread springboard and because the recipes are chosen for easy variations they lend themselves to creating your own as well. We have only found a few recipes to be a little vague on the directions but overall have not had too many problems with this book. Overall well recommended for those that are looking for a lot of dessert recipes that can be built on. I should also note that this has a section on non dessert items like quiche and shepards pie.

This makes a very neat gift.I have enjoyed everything that I have made and really like the alternative ingredient section.

What a brilliant little book, lots of ideas, but also lots of basic pastries sauces and fillings recipes at the beginning. So for me this is a winner. Sometimes you can look at a recipe book and only fancy making one or two things out of it. This one has so many that I personally will make. Not to fiddly either which is good. I only got it yesterday but already stocking up with the few basics required for many of these little tarts and pies.

I really like the easy variations for each recipe, especially the pastry and crumble variations. I have used these in my own recipes too. The instructions are really clear without complicated ingredients.

great little book with some super ideas and good easy to follow instructions. Ordered copies for my sisters for xmas gifts. They were really pleased and also said what a great book it is
