How effective is the stunning power and will it really take down attacker?

I've been stung by it and it's incredibly powerful. However, I don't believe it will take the attacker down. It will stun them and they won't want to be stung by it again that's for sure. Also, the sound of the zap is loud and startling. I take it when I walk my dogs and I feel safe.
