Very good instruction and explanation of principles
I'm glad I bought this product. Not only does he demonstrate good techniques, but the principles he explains can be used from various position. Demian uses the goals of weakening your opponent's position and working from your own strong positions. This includes working from strong, closed, and tight positions with your elbows to your sides and close to lockout arm positions. I watched the entire series (both). I watched the 1st dvd on guard pass prevention again and noticed more things of benefit such as bicep control while controlling the opponents head. He doesn't waste time using a lot of words. I'd say if you can afford it or can find a good way to get it, get it. This series is part of the instruction needed to be a good fighter. Also, Anderson Silva's book on striking is good. Wrestling for fighting from Randy Couture has good ideas.

Not all that great!
I learned a few tricks from this series but other than that, it's so so....Demian is no doubt a world class BJJ guy, but the quality of instruction and details can be better. Way too many little things are left out, which is a shame. If you don't know anything at all, this would be good. However, if you are a serious Blue Belt and above, then this is not for you. I am say SERIOUS Blue Belt, not McDojo Blue Belt.

Very good set if it fits your budget
I love Demian Maia's Science of Jiu Jitsu volume 1 and volume 2. I liked the defending the guard and side control escapes sections a lot. The problem I have with the set is that I felt the material could have flowed a little better. Also some of the examples on the techniques looked like they wouldn't work in actual sparring. What I think would have made it better would be a section of actual sparring or competition showing how he used the techniques for real. What would put this over the top is if he provided some live commentary over the footage with some possible slow motion and rewind to really it home the point.Bottom line is this a great DVD set. There is a ton of material. Maia arguably has the best Jiu Jitsu in MMA and he has done very well in BJJ int'l competition. He does have a thick accent but it didn't bother me. I would say that white belts thru blue belts and some purple belts would probably find this set useful. If you are really new you might look into Roy Dean's blue belt requirements set. All of his stuff is great. If you are really new and want more self defense application then Gracie Combatives. Brandon Mullins has a great set out too.

Clearly conveys concepts
1st I'll review vol 1 I have a small collection of instructionals , love the science for the explanations of core concepts the 1st set is awesome my favorite is the counter attacks disc however for a blank slate I would suggest this set for it's defending the pass is very applicable at all levels the omaplalta disc is good for anyone struggling there and the triangle volume everyone should seeNow vol 2Not nearly as good as the 1st hence the 4stars over all in this se I like the passing segment the advanced sweeps is very cool and atacking the top half was cool the rest seemed kinda like filler and was rather disapointed with the anaconda guard like the octopus guard disc better (see turtle guard by Eduardo telles )but both guards seem incomplete

The best Jiu jitsu DVD's
I love that Demian Maia talks about principles of moves and positions,so you get to understand HOW a move works and WHY it works before even trying to do it, facilitating the learning process that is the best way to learn for me cause now i can even improvise applying those same principals.. about the price i have to say that i looked everywhere for these DVD's and i could not find a better deal

Best explanation of BJJ concepts
Damian Maia definately know what he's talking about. Explains BJJ concepts and not just how to do a move. He really gets down and explain why moves work. Great value, hope to see more of it in the future.
