Robert Mitchum and Ava Gardner are star-crossed lovers in this steamy tale of a woman scorned, set in 1890s New Orleans. Wrongly believing Barbara Beaurevel (Gardner) had stood him up on the eve of their elopement, Dr. Mark Lucas (Mitchum) has returned from South Africa accompanied by Corinne (Janis Carter), a woman he married on the rebound. Determined to win him back, Barbara bribes her cousin (Melvin Douglas) to break up the marriage, coldblooded scheme that ends in death and the doctor suspected of murder. Based on Polan Banks' 1947 novel, Carriage Entrance, My Forbidden Past was directed by Robert Stevenson (Jane Eyre) and features the first and only teaming of Mitchum and Gardner. Borrowed from M-G-M, Gardner was one of Hollywood's most ravishing stars, her earthy sensuality combining with Mitchum's smoldering cool to create a rare on-screen chemistry that still sizzles today.

WELL DONE CLEVER CHARACTER DRAMA
ALL THE ACTORS HAVE HAD GREAT CAREERS AND HELD THEIR OWN OPPOSITE MANY BIG NAME MOVIE STARS.AVA GARDNER WAS ONE OF THE GREAT BEAUTIES OF HOLLYWOOD, ALTHOUGH SHE CAN ACT, SHE IS NOT VERY GOOD AT SHOWING EMOTION IN HER FACE, SHE HAS VERY FEW SETTINGS. THE CAMERA LOVES HER AND HER DIRECTORS USE HER FOR CLOSE UPS.IN ALL OF HIS MOVIE ROLES, ROBERT MITCHUM ALWAYS SEEMS TO ME TO BE THE OUTSIDER THAT EVERYONE REVOLVES AROUND. HE HAS A THIRD VIEW KIND OF LIKE THE AUDIENCE.IN MY OPINION THE REAL STANDOUT STAR OF THIS MOVIE IS MELVYN DOUGLAS WHO HAS MORE CHARISMA THAN LOOKS OR CHARACTER.ADD TO THE MIX MONEY, POWER AND CLASS STRUGGLES IN OLD NEW ORLEANS.

The story has nothing new to tell, but it's fun watching Douglas, Mitchum and Mrs. Gardner.The running time of 70 Min. is exactly what this movie needs.

I'm a huge fan of classic movies and this DVD delivers. Ava Gardner is beauitiful and Mitchem is great in this unusual story.

A great story of secrets, deceit and power
I truly loved this story though I feel it's more of an Ava Gardner film then a Robert Mitchum film but that's ok. The story has an interesting story of a young woman controlled by her grandmother and uncle. A woman who wants to escape their grasp. She falls in love with Robert Mitchum character who is on his way to becoming a doctor and they scheme to get on a boat and never look back. Does that plan happen? Watch the movie and find out, you won't be disappointed.
