Q: is it really air tight? if i store chopped garlic will the smell escape?? the real test...

Is it really airtight.... is kind of in the eyes of the beholder. If I pick the canister up by the lid will the lid move at all, no. same if i pull on the lid, it is quite airtight! Is there a small space where the button you push releases the lids you can take it off .... yes, doesnt let air out but that is the one place a smell comes out, and by comes out i mean so little you wont notice. i just smell through it because what i store is quite pungent... here it goes, Well... I store medical marijuana in mine and it keeps the smell in quite well, of course nothing is perfect but marijuana outdoes garlic smell any day so I would say yes, I apologize if you are offended by the marijuana... Hope this helps!

Q: How easy is this to open/close? Does it take both hands to operate?

It is easy to open/close. It does not require strength. Closing is more like a push-down while holding a button on the side.I use one hand to hold the canister and the other to open the lid. However, you could use your arm to hold the canister if need be.It is a great purchase.
