Overall a good product. Met needs for a road trip.
I searched for several different products and read many reviews before making the purchase. Overall, I was very pleased with it. I just finished a two week road trip across the United States starting in Tennessee and ended up in California. I drove a Toyota 4Runner. The PackRight Sport 1 Car Top Carrier was the perfect size for my truck. I could not imagine using it for a smaller car...I don't think it would have been efficient for anything but an SUV...but I see that others have used it for smaller cars. My truck has the rack above my car, so securing the car top carrier was not a problem. The straps provided were great at keeping it in tact. I also did not have to worry about lose ends flapping in the wind because I actually tied the excess straps down with some string. The PackRight carrier DID tear at one spot...near the front of the car...BUT, it was my fault. (I posted some personal photographs--you can see where the compression straps caused a hole to form.) The instructions clearly stated that it was not a good idea to line anything with corners or edges in the carrier. (I personally didn't know how to get around this as I was packing boxes.) In my carrier, I was able to fit three filing boxes (banker boxes) across the width without a problem, and even more smaller boxes to fill it up. The top of the bag does indeed expand but I don't recommend overpacking. The velcro strips that kept the flaps secure...for the most part...worked fine. I initially had expanded the carrier but did not want to risk water getting into it, so I took out some stuff. Two weeks on the road along the southern route of the US, it actually only rained a couple of times. When I was driving through Austin, I was on the interstate and the rain was pouring heavily for almost an hour straight. I was worried as I was driving through the storm, but figured if things got wet...well it would get wet. (Because I had smaller boxes loaded up top in it, I actually wrapped all of my boxes in garbage bags as a precaution. I would later realize at my final destination I didn't need to do that...but better safe than sorry.) When I was out of the rain storm, I checked all of my stuff the next morning and everything was fine, despite the small hole I created. The only reason the hole was created was because of the compression straps putting too much pressure on one of the corners of the boxes. All I did to fix it was opened up the carrier and used duct tape to tape an X over it, and I did the same from the outside. That was on the 3 day of my two week trip. From TN to CA over a period of two weeks, I had no problem with the car top carrier. The only reason I had to get access to it was because I wanted to repack some things...but other than that, it worked great. I had no problems with the extra straps flying around, no wind causing it to create unnecessary or unwanted sounds...all while driving at an average of 75-80mph across the US. I needed a car top carrier that was inexpensive, efficient, and effective. The PackRight Sport 1 Car Top met my needs and was great for my two week road trip across the US in my Toyota 4Runner. I bought the liner/mat that was suggested for it. I read some reviews that some people thought that you could get by without one...and you probably could, but it was only an extra 20 bucks and I went ahead and bought it and definitely thought it was the right choice. By the time I got to SF and unloaded, I could see clearly from the debris where I had used the liner. It definitely kept the car top carrier in its place...but besides that, it kept my car from getting beat up. The paint on the car is still very nice and I did not want to risk getting it scratched...so, the liner was an investment that was well worth its value. Owning an SUV, I will more than likely use the carrier again. It came with a carrier bag that makes it easy for me to store. I threw all of the straps and folded the carrier into it and I just left it in the back of my 4Runner. I was really pleased with the product and am glad to say that I had no problems with it. I would recommend this product to others. Cheers!

Great product that actually works exactly as advertised
Bought this for use on a rental Town & Country minivan on vacation in Florida. Worked perfectly. In full disclosure, I did not have any heavy rains to test that aspect, but it was easy to install and secure. Fit perfectly between the front and rear roof rack cross bars. You do need to fill it up volume-wise to minimize flapping in the wind, but once done it was quiet and did not pull on the van at all. I did stop after about 30 minutes to retighten the straps, but it was secure. I also used a no-slip roof pad to protect the top of the van, and you have to be thoughtful about how much weight you put into this because the roof can only hold so much (this bag was sitting right on the roof surface with just a sliding pad between the bag and the roof's paint.) We got a few large suitcases in and then filled the space with dirty laundry bags, duffle bags, beach towels, etc. Again, the more full the volume (not weight), the better this will perform in wind. Also, I only used two of the included straps to secure it (one in the front and one in the back), and those connected to the roof rack sides. In hindsight, a 3rd, probably less convenient to attach and tighten, strap could have run from the center front crossbar to the center rear crossbar (over the top and along the length of the van). I would do that if I had a long trip just as a precaution to hold everything down to the roof, but that would just be me wanting to have a belt and suspenders. Again, I fortunately did not get to test the watertight aspects of this bag because we had sunny weather, but the seams are and zippers are all coated and the Velcro covers seem as if they would do a good job to keep out moisture if installed correctly. Lastly, this size seems like a good one, although they sell larger. A larger bag seems like it could allow too much weight on a roof, but that is just something each person needs to determine for your own trips. No rooftop carriers are designed for more than a few hundred pounds, and many are less than that, but it is usually the roof limitations (you don't want to leave a huge dent) that drive that decision. Overall, I am very pleased with this product.

worked great, but how you pack it matters
I bought this bag for camping since that's the only time I need extra cargo capacity. It holds quite a bit and was enough to comfortably bring all our camping gear. On it's first trip, we encountered rather heavy thunderstorms so it was really put to the test. It was truly waterproof and everything inside stayed nice and dry. I did get about 3-4 miles less per gallon, but I expected some drop in gas mileage. I also used the pad underneath the bag and 2 additional cinch straps (both purchased separately) around the whole bag for extra security and peace of mind -- I have a roof-rack but no crossbars. Overall it worked very well--on the trip home, the bag lifted some on the front and shifted slightly to the rear but everything survived just fine. I believe that if I pack some heavier items in the front it might help this situation. One improvement they could make is to provide more detailed packing guidelines since they basically tell you to pack it full -- which I did. Packing a lot of light things in the front of the bag seems to make for more lifting though so I'll be trying a different packing strategy on my next trip. I also think the bag would be more secure with crossbars since that would allow for anchoring in the front where the lifting occurs. I also believe the extra cinch straps I used are worth while and helped make it more secure. For the money, this is a good bag and a good solution for a few times a year I need extra space.

The best thing since sliced bread!
I absolutely love this item and cannot say enough good things about it! We bought it to use with our 2004 Prius that doesn't have a luggage rack. We weren't able to use the actual straps that came with the bag because it turned out that the car clips that came with it wouldn't fit securely on our vehicle. However, the straps appear to be of good quality so I see no reason that they wouldn't perform very adequately if used. We ended up running tie downs through the rings on the sides of the bags, through the door openings and across the interior of the car. Not a perfect solution, but very workable since we were on a time schedule and had failed to check to make sure the clips would fit ahead of time. As for the bag itself, it's very heavy duty and holds way more than I expected it would. We put in a large size foldable dog crate, 2 lawn chairs folded flat, two very large and bulky wedge shaped foam cushions, a medium/large bag of clothes, extra shoes, heavy jackets, extra blanket, laptop bag, hard-sided overnight case, and a variety of other smaller odds 'n ends! It was pretty amazing! We zipped it closed, folded the flap down over the zipper, cinched the tie downs tight, and we were ready to roll. About 30 minutes into the trip, we ran into a freak thunderstorm that lasted for a solid 15-20 mins and it was raining so hard you could barely see past the front of the car. It continued to rain intermittently and probably rained for about 4 of the 6 hours we were on the road. When we arrived at our destination and unzipped the bag, every single item in it was dry as a bone! Not even a hint of dampness anywhere! I couldn't have been more pleased and would recommend this carrier for anyone needing safe and dry storage while traveling. One thing I would suggest is to do a dry run of laying out the bag on the floor and placing the biggest items in it so you can figure out the best placement for everything in order to make sure you can zip it closed all the way around. Because it's soft-sided, there's definitely flexibility in placement but just be sure there's no sharp ends sticking into the material. The pictures show it being packed so that everything looks square, but in the real world, it usually just ain't so :-) Pack it fullest in the front to avoid any noise from the bag flapping in the wind from any empty spaces and you won't be sorry about the job it will do for you. Safe (and dry) travels to all!

Dangerous and Poorly Made — Broke on First Use
I purchased the Cargo Sport 2 rooftop bag with high hopes, but it completely failed on its very first use. Within one trip, the zipper broke, making it nearly impossible to secure the bag. Even worse, one of the main straps ripped almost completely away from the bag and was barely hanging on. We were extremely lucky it didn’t detach entirely while driving — if it had, it could have flown off the roof and caused serious damage or even injured someone. This product feels cheaply constructed with low-quality materials that are not suitable for the stress and vibration of highway travel. The stitching and strap reinforcement are completely inadequate, and the zipper is not heavy-duty enough for the job. I followed the instructions for installation exactly and did not overload the bag, yet it still failed catastrophically. For a product intended to hold cargo on top of a moving vehicle, safety and durability should be the absolute top priorities. Unfortunately, the Cargo Sport 2 failed on both counts. I would never recommend it to anyone, and I now have to replace it with something far more reliable.

Just what you need!
My [extended] family spends a week together at the beach every summer, it's usually a really good time. Because there's usually a ton of us--many of which are children and their friends--my wife and I usually bring separate vehicles so we can bring extra stuff and have another vehicle while we're out there. At any rate, this year we had some minor problems with my wife's SUV just before we were to leave, and suddenly we had less than two days to figure out how to get four of us (and a week's worth of gear) all packed into my Toyota FJ. I love taking my truck to the beach, but it just doesn't have the room for this sort of thing. Yikes! No stores local to me stock this sort of rooftop bag, and I wanted to make sure I got something I could actually use (hopefully more than once, right?). I took a chance and ordered this product, next day, through Prime. It arrived, packaged well, as promised. It's super easy to understand what's going on with this thing, and it really was a breeze getting it in place and filling it up. The bag is waterproof, lightweight, and seems to be fairly tough. I tied it down to my roof rack with [my own] ratchet straps, and found the 'D' rings on the outside of the bag made it very easy to tie down snugly. Honestly, I doubt it shifted a single inch during the 250 mile trek to the beach. There was very little wind noise, and it had no effect at all on the handling of my truck. If you're careful how you load it, you really can put A LOT of stuff in there. Unloading was super easy as well, and the whole things rolls up and fits neatly into the supplied storage bag. This thing saved my tail, I mean that. It's hard to believe that something as goofy as a bag made such a tough situation laughably easy! The only downside to it I can think of is that because it's black, it gets really, really hot... so you might want to consider that when you're figuring out what you want to put in there. Also, I could see some of the velcro strips not lasting too long, but that won't really affect much, just won't look as neat is all. There may be plenty of these cargo carriers out there that are better, I'm not really an expert when it comes to giant bags you strap to your roof! For me personally, I would buy this again in a minute, super happy!

Waterproof Car Top Carrier LIfesaver!!!
Imagine having all your Christmas presents wrapped and ready to go and realizing that in a couple of weeks, all those blessed gifts plus 3 adults and ALL their winter luggage need to fit into a 2005 Lexus RX330 to make a trip over the Sierras for the holidays. Realization hits that even being the best of packers all this stuff will not fit inside the car. Quick, do thorough search on car top carriers and pray its delivered in time to use! After reading countless reviews on many soft top carriers, one thing was crystal clear -- WATERPROOF was not optional! Rightline was one of the highest rated carriers and man, did their product deliver! Outstanding craftsmanship and durability! We encountered wind and rain on this trip. Everything in carrier remained completely dry. It is very important to follow the instructions on positioning the carrier correctly and securing the flaps over the zipper as well as filling it to capacity. We used a non-slip roof mat to ensure our car top would not get scratched! In our opinion this is not optional if you do not want to end up with scratches!!! To position bag correctly between our rooftop side rails, the mat and bag will partially cover the sunroof window and extend onto the roof towards rear of vehicle. Note, if you have cross bars, those will need to come off, as this soft carrier must lay flat on your car top. HELPFUL HINT: To determine what size carrier we would need, we measured out the dimensions of the 15 cu ft carrier on our dining room table (the floor would work fine to) We took everything we knew we would need to place in the carrier, along with some "stand in" items and stacked it all within the dimensions. Perfect! Ordered via Amazon Prime and had in 2 days! Morning of trip, we placed carrier on our living room floor and loaded it up to ensure everything fit and there were no big gaps anywhere (sleeping bags, pillows, blankets helped keep bag full). Took pictures on phone so knew exactly how to fill carrier once on top of car. Made sure roof was clean with no dust or debris, laid down non-slip mat, placed car top carrier on mat, loaded carrier, zipped and folded flaps over zipper, secured with lock. Easily attached straps to side rails and tightened to make sure bag was secure. Checked periodically throughout trip. Bag stayed put/secure, no movement during trip, or need to tighten straps. Didn't feel much drag or hear much wind noise with carrier. Once we arrived at destination, easily unloaded carrier, removed from car top, wiped down, folded and placed in storage bag. No scratches on vehicle roof, thanks to non-slip pad! We'll revisit our review if we have any more input after using it again! From our experience, we can highly recommend Rightline's 100% Waterproof Gear Sport 2 , 15 cu ft Car Top Carrier! Happy and safe travels!

Saves space, Velcro glue melted
While this did help out with holding things to have more room in our SUV while going camping, on the way back the glue that holds the velcro on, melted, so the velcro isn't usable anymore.
