The whistle is made from a piece of birchwood, hollowed out. It's the sort of thing that I'd be really proud of if I'd made it myself - and it's so simple that one could easily make one.My gripe is with the product description and also with the price.Regarding the price: five quid would be more than enough for a hollowed-out stick whose rim/blowing-hole i had to sand and clean with a knife to make it usable.Regarding the sound: It does NOT make a sound like an owl! The tone is completely wrong. It is also far too sotto-voce to call anything from afar. I tried it out, by hiding at dusk in a small copse and replying to the calls of an owl in a neighbouring woodland. The owl promptly flew away, but my son turned up saying, "I was wondering who was making the train noises!"
