Do the sides slope more than the 10x10 version?

We have both the 10x10 and the 15x13. I believe the sides of the 13x15 does slope more. We love both shelters. The 15x13 will fit over a picnic table at most camping sites. Both shelters are great, it just depends on the room you have for a shelter.

Could an average size picnic table fit under this comfortably?

It will fit but people will find it difficult to move around freely. The slope is greater than indicated and if it rains expect a lot of water on the table and those sitting. Did not measure as advertised.

Does it come with stakes?

Yes, it comes with a set of stakes but they aren't the deep, heavy duty ones.

I want a large mesh tent to raise monarch butterflies. Can I modify this to put mesh at the top to let the sun in?

I think maybe you could cut out panels in the top and replace with mesh. However, you should look at the top and when you set it up because it really isn't a very large ceiling.
