Lay-out vs. punch?
For me, the primary challenge of hand sewing leather is making even stitches and making them in a smooth path. This tool is very helpful for both. While not robust enough to punch holes through the leather, this tool makes laying out the stitch pattern quite easy.

Need strong grip strength to punch through
Needed strong grip strength to punch through two layers of deer leather. Did so by putting one side against a hard surface and pushing down. The artificial sinew sewing thread is good quality. One thing the kit needs is a needle threader as the sinew is difficult to thread otherwise. I had several in my own sewing box, so I was fine. If you don't already have one they are easy to order off Amazon with 10's of them for $4US to $6US.

The escapade
Once upon a time, in a craft room not so far away, I embarked on a leatherworking journey, armed with enthusiasm and a brand-new stitching hole punch. This wasn’t just any hole punch; oh no, it promised the moon and stars - a tool designed to pierce through leather with the grace of a ballerina and the precision of an eagle. Unfortunately, what I got was more akin to a confused pigeon bumping into a window.Let’s get into the nitty-gritty, shall we? This clamp-style contraption, with aspirations of greatness, had one job: to make clean, neat holes for stitching leather. Sounds simple enough, right? Well, it seems that my tool must have misunderstood its life purpose. Rather than gliding through leather, it preferred to play a game of ‘catch me if you can’ with it. Getting stuck in the leather became its favorite pastime, turning what should have been a straightforward task into a tug-of-war championship. But wait, there’s more! Just when I thought we might find some common ground, the top piece decided it had enough and would frequently embark on solo adventures mid-use. There I was, left holding the leather in one hand, the bottom half of the tool in the other, and wondering if perhaps the top piece had gone off in search of a more fulfilling destiny. Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m all for tools with a sense of independence, but when you’re halfway through crafting a wallet and your hole punch decides it’s a good time to fall apart, you start questioning your life choices. In the spirit of fairness, I must admit that when the stars aligned and the hole punch decided to cooperate, it did create some decent holes. These moments were fleeting, however, like glimpsing a unicorn in a dense fog. You know it’s something special, but you can’t help feeling a bit disappointed when it disappears before your eyes.In conclusion, my experience with this stitching hole punch was akin to a rollercoaster designed by a committee of squirrels. It was an adventure, a test of patience, and a lesson in improvisation. Would I recommend it? Only if you’re in need of a good laugh or perhaps a doorstop with character. Two stars, because let’s face it, any tool that adds this much excitement to leatherworking deserves a nod for entertainment value.

Exactly What I Was Hoping For
This hand held punch with chisel points cuts 4 first holes then 3 new holes with each cut. I'm making little envelopes and handbags and card purses out of soft upholstery leather that is glued at the edges first with contact cement, then punched, then saddle stitched. This hand held punch is so much more convenient that using a hammer and special surface with the forklike cutter punches. Portable and quiet. On stiffer leather, it may be hard to get the leather off each time, or harder to squeeze through. Please make tips that are 5mm apart as well as 6mm apart because I prefer the looks of longer stitches.

Do not buy this product if your looking for quality
Broke first time using it, would not recommend. It exploded when trying to use it and threw the piercing attachment across the room along with the magnet. Only reason why it's not 1 star is because it came with needles and thread that I can actually use.

It’s a lifesaver
Used this to punch my chinks and it was a lifesaver. I wish the punch teeth had a locking mechanism, as they did pop off the magnet quite a bit, but it wasn’t terrible. I’m an amputee and was able to easily use it with one hand. I like it had three options for teeth and came with great quality needles and wax thread. Honestly compared with other products it’s a great value and very nice tool. Better quality than I was expecting and extremely durable.Punched through three 5oz hides effortlessly. Seams look amazing.
