I bought this thinking "how much different could a safety razor design make a shave feel, if all blades were equal?" Turns out, it can be quite different. This one felt way smoother than my old one - and I was using the same blades. It also has a Solid weight to it. Definitely recommend. I was able to shave in the dark when my power went out, from feel alone - without having to worry about cutting myself.

Having been new to wet shaving I initially questioned if the r89 was aggressive enough the 1st few times I shaved. I went through a learning curve not only for the razor, but lathering the shave soap or cream, finding the right blade that works best with the r89 for me, not for someone else, and the proper preparation and finish to my shave. Now I am so glad I went with the Muhle r89. Every day I look forward to my shave. I opted for the rose gold handle that is beautiful and looks wonderful in my bathroom. The balance, the weight and the size of the razor is perfect for me. The efficiency is amazing. I get a barber shop quality shave at home. Yet mild enough for shaving every day or every other day. I can't imagine ever needing another razor.

My first safety razor experience was the Van Der Hagen (herein referred to as VDH) you get at the big box stores. While that is a decent razor for what you pay, it isn't nearly as nice as this. This one is very forgiving and glides smoother across the skin than the VDH. It also cuts very slightly closer than the VDH. If you are looking for a quality first safety razor, this is it. If you have a VDH and are looking for something more aggressive, I would go with an open comb. I have been shaving with the VDH for years and wanted something nice so went with this to step it up. Kind of wish I had gone with an open comb for a closer shave, but this is still a fantastic razor.

I really like this razor, I’m tired of spending money on throw aways so I decided to go back to the roots of a safety razor. I’m new at this and after reading lots of reviews I went with the MUHLE R89 I also need it for travel so I got the slip over guard. This razor is really nice easy to use and heavy. I do wish the handle was a little longer but that’s not a deal breaker. I’m using MUHLE blades and it shaves fantastic! I be should have done this years ago.

MÜHLE TRADITIONAL R89 Razor I have owned this for a little over a month, and I have been very pleased with the comfort and performance. I have used it with several of my favorite "go-to" blades, and several lower quality blades, the latter of which performed as I had expected, so no negative comments toward the razor itself in that respect. As with any new razor you buy, there will be a learning curve because they are all different. However, I found this one to be very forgiving and easy to adapt to where your shaving style is concerned. If I were to say that it has any drawbacks, it would be that like all short head razors it exposes a substantial portion of the clipped end of the blade, which can sometimes be rather sharp. This, however, is caused by the separation of the blades during manufacturing and is to be expected. Just keep this in mind when handling the razor and you should not have any problems. At the end of the day, I have no problem recommending this razor, and might go so far as to say that if you are new to DE shaving, this might be a good and reasonably priced starter razor.
