Pretend play
Fun toy, the markers last well if lids are kept on when not using. Very sturdy toys that will last, the Cupcake liners are paper and did not last long but we replaced with rubber ones and they have worked great.

Lots of fun!
These are really cute. Like most M&D products, these are on the larger size compared to most other brands.. A great addition to the play bakery.

Quality Toy
My daughter has been obsessed with cupcakes, so we got her these for Christmas and they’ve been an absolute hit! She plays with them almost daily. She loves deconstructing them and reconstructing them, as well as, coloring on them. The quality is superior and what you would expect of a Melissa & Doug toy. They are well worth the money and a toy that will hold up for years to come. The only “cheap” part of the toy would be the cupcake liners since they’re real paper ones, but liners are cheap and can be easily replaced.

One Year Later - Still a Crowd Pleaser
We bought this when my son was about 2.5 years old and, one year later, he still loves baking cupcakes in his kitchen. That's a great endorsement when you consider how fickle toddlers can be. He has many other toys that he lost interest in despite the fact that they're pretty new.CONS:MARKER ICINGI read the reviews about the markers so I never let my son touch the icing. This caused a mini tantrum, but I knew he would have been even more upset to realize he couldn't clean his cupcakes. He also really hates getting marker on his fingers and hands, so the markers would have been confiscated eventually. I thought about gluing the caps on and letting him use them for pretend play, but he and I both completely forgot about the markers after the first week. He still thoroughly enjoys playing with the set even without the icing markers.PAPER LINERSThe paper liners were crushed and crumbled right away. We still have some, but paper seems like a pretty odd choice when the rest of the set is so well made. The cupcakes, the candles, the icing markers, and the cupcake tin are all wood. The icing (cupcake cover) is a sturdy rubber/plastic and the mitt is fabric. I love keeping his toys complete but every time I see those paper liners, I just get the urge to dump them in the trash.PROS:My son is turning 4 soon and he still loves this. He makes us cupcakes every week. He made us all birthday cupcakes yesterday with the same amount of glee and fascination as he did when we first opened the box. Despite the toy's CONS, it has staying power and we definitely got (and continue to get) our money's worth out of these.

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
First, let me begin by echoing a couple of the complaints noted by other reviewers--the markers stain and the paper cups are flimsy. If you have an older, more mature child, the markers are fine (and adorable, to boot!). My 2 year old's clothing has only been victim to one stray mark in the 3 months that we have owned this set. Furthermore, if marker gets on the wooden part of the cupcake or begins to discolor the 'icing' it can be returned to 'like new' condition with the all-powerful Mr. Clean Magic Eraser--It will not come off with soap and water alone. On the other hand, if your child is on the messy side, ditch the markers and get some washable dry erase markers.Despite its flaws, this is an adorable playset that offers lots of interaction and educational opportunities (e.g. ask your child to make you a chocolate cupcake with pink icing and green sprinkles). My nearly 5 year old son can't even resist joining in the fun. This is yet another unique, imagination-inspiring product from M&D. Happy Baking!!

Daughter loved it
My 2 year old daughter spent literally all day playing with this. She enjoyed having pretend birthday parties with her stuffies and loves decorating the frosting with “sprinkles” I.e with the markers! What a fun toy

fave 'kitchen' toy!
My daughter has owned this set for about 2 years now, and not only has it held up very well, it has become our go-to gift for any little girl's birthday! These cupcakes are loved not only by my 4-year old, but also by my 1-year old, and my 2-year old twin nieces, their 10-year old big sister, and all of my daughter's 3-4 year old friends. There are 4 of them in the set, so plenty to share! I found it a bit disappointing at first, because I didn't realize that the 'icing' was plastic (we went far out of our way to ensure that the entire kitchen set was wood or fabric), but. . . it only makes sense that it has to be for the markers. At this point the dry-erase markers are dried up and gone, but we had fun with those while they lasted. The ONLY problem we had with that is if you don't wash the cupcakes clean as soon as the kids are done playing with them, they do stain the plastic. Also, kids tend to mark on the velcro (for the candle) with them, and that won't wash clean. My kids are not in the slightest bit bothered by this, so I don't let it bother me. After so much time has passed, I'd say that I still WOULD prefer the icing to be made of wood or fabric, and wouldn't have a problem with eliminating the markers altogether from this set. Those were fun while they lasted, but. . . looking at a toy that will in all likelihood last a lifetime, the markers are kind of a gimmicky short-lived thing. It would also be nice if M&D offered replacements for both the markers and the cupcake liners. As mentioned in the other reviews, these are just slightly thicker than normal paper liners, and didn't last very long - though they were fun while they did - they should at least have been cardstock! All in all, we have gotten many hours of fun with these cupcakes, and they're always the first thing they go to when playing in their kitchen! You get a very high-quality toy for the price. . .I highly recommend these to anyone!
