Great Value
GREAT value for the money! Much better than entry level strings, but not a lot more expensive. They are durable and smooth to play. LOVE the warmer sound it gives my instrument. They hold tuning really well.

Good quality sound for cheap prices - slightly bulky winding at the tailpiece.
I wanted to give this a 4.5! I got a set of strings for an antique Stainer fiddle that I was setting up for my son. I played violin myself, up through college and then taught elementary strings while in graduate school, and played the fiddle for fun. I’ve changed quite a few strings. I’ve paid a lot for some good synthetic strings too. These are quite good. However, I broke two strings when installing them, despite the usual caution, the use of pencil lead for the bridge and the peg box. Part of the problem is that the fine tuners on my instrument aren’t really designed for ball tipped strings. The thread winding is so tight, I had a hard time fitting the string into the tuner grooves. So, I broke the A at the tuner, the E I broke at the peg. So, I replaced them with D’Addario Ascents. Their winding was also a tight fit, but a little better. It seems that the only loop end strings are the steel ones, and I really didn’t want those. I may eventually replace the tail piece with one that will accommodate ball tip strings better. My own violin only has a fine tuner on the E string, but for a kid, I figure that the fine tuners are helpful, at least for the teacher! So, I cannot speak for the upper two strings, but the lower ones sound good, and make the instrument sound clear and warm. They only took a day or two to settle into pitch and they made an inexpensive instrument sound as good as my nice violin. But if you need to use them with tuners that have narrow metal slots, these are hard to fit. This isn’t really a critique of the string, but more of a practical detail to consider.

Love their customer service
Customer service saved this review. Fiddlershop is truly committed to making your order perfect. Three days into playing with these strings, I was extremely disappointed to have the G string unravel. I immediately contacted the seller, and showed them a picture, complaining that I had never had a G-string break before - and in no case had I had a string break after only a couple of days. Even though it was a holiday weekend, they responded promptly and told me that a faulty G string is indeed rare - and that they were Fed-Exing me a new one - plus an entire set of new Fiddlerman strings. When the package arrived, it also contained a complementary cleaning cloth and a fiddle-shaped bottle opener. :) Now to the review of the actual strings: I love their tone, and how quickly they tune and stay in tune. They compare favorably to the D'Addario Pro Arte strings I have on my violin. I bought these strings to put on a 50 year old fiddle I recently acquired. It had been sitting in a closet since 1978, and it's tone though mellow, was fairly "dead". The first few days of playing with these Fiddlerman strings, it was still pretty lifeless - and then the disappointment of the broken string made me think I'd better try something more expensive. But the excellent response from Fiddlershop made it worthwhile to keep going with these strings. And I'm happy to say that daily playing has brought the fiddle back to life. It has a warm, mellow sound that I wouldn't have believed two weeks ago. I will not hesitate to deal with Fiddlershop again, because I know they care about their customers.

Fun to try on a budget
I tried these strings on my violin after my last set of Thomastik Dominant strings wore out. My husband suggested I tried the Fiddlerman strings since they are half the price and we have been really looking into their store and products for future purchases. We liked what we read in the reviews and decided to give it a go. Ok, so at first they did sound great, but when your old strings are so dead anything sounds great. The E string really does sound good in my opinion and the rest of the strings have a nice mellow sound too. The G is nice and warm and it does not take a lot of work to get a good sound to come out of it (I struggle with this since I've been playing for 2 years). I very much wanted to love these strings, but I just can't. I've had them on for a month and have had issues with the strings not staying in tune and even falling out of tune while playing. I don't have issues with my pegs or fine tuners. I have planetary pegs on my violin tuning is not normally an issue. I thought that after a couple of weeks I'd be past the break-in period but I guess not. But I will say, they are durable. I play a variety of music ranging from new-age, classical, and fiddle and these have not shown any sign of wear and tear. I'd recommend these for anyone wanting to try different strings on a budget or to have something that sounds great for fiddle music. I'm hoping that the turning issue may just be this set and not all of them.
