Incredible value
The picture makes it look much bigger than it actually is. It's just about exactly 1 foot long, with a 5 1/2 inch long head. The handle is a very strong type of plastic material, and it looks great. The rubber grip gives excellent grip and it very comfortable to hold at the same time. The head is thick, but not too thick and has a nice flat grind on the edge. It comes slightly sharpened, but can be made to have an absolute razor edge, which holds excellently. Even though the blade is stainless steel, it is very strong, and it also has a cool dark grey coating, which stays on well. Due to its decreased size, it does not get in the way anywhere you have it stored. It is rather light compared to most hatchets, but still packs an icredible hit. The kydex sheathe is very durable, and will not rot like leather. It fits the head perfectly and snaps on and off. The snap is a bit hard to open and close at first, but with time gets easier. Lastly, the fire steel. The ferro rod is hidden in the base of the handle, completely out of the way. The rod on it's own is worth atleast $20. This thing is enormous. It is 2 3/4 inches long, and 3/8 inches thick. It is much larger than a usual firestarter rod. The top of the head (NOT THE EDGE) works great to spark it, and it sends off a LOT of sparks. The absolutely only bad thing I've found is that the lanyard that comes on the ferro rod is very cheap, but that can easily be fixed with a nice paracord lanyard. Overall, this is a wonderful investment for a small camping/hiking hatchet.

Best value in a small axe/hatchet!
I bought both the SCAXE2 (small) and the SCAXE2L (bigger). While the steel that the head is made of isn't the same caliber as some more expensive axes, these little guys chew through wood like no other I've used. Their light weight and excellent ergonomics make them a very easy and precise tool to use. They hold an edge fairly well, and are easy to sharpen back up (the larger one even came with a sharpening "puck"). The compact size on either makes for easy carry inside or lashed to your pack. The smaller has a plastic sheath and the larger has a nylon sheath. Both are well designed and protect the blade (and you/your stuff from it), and both can be worn on the belt, though I will likely never carry them there. Over all I couldn't be happier with the tough design, and the nice ergos. Oh, and each came with a large ferro-rod in the handle. These axes are a great value!

Absolutely Perfect!
This is the perfect camp/survival hatchet! It is small and compact but do not be fooled by its size, this hatchet splits like an axe much bigger due to the fact that all the weight is in the axe head. The handle is slim and conforms to my hand like it was meant to.The overall build quality had me scratching my head because i could not believe its made in china! It is built like a tank!!with no quality control issues to the human eye and the materials used to make this axe looks and acts like its a usa product.I compared this to the Estwing camp axe and to be honest id grab the Schrade in a heart beat!I have no doubts that this axe will let me down and am confident that this will last me a lifetime.Schrade has become very active in the survival cutlery industry, with their line of quality knives and now this great compact hatchet.

Fantastic axe, NOT for throwing.
I bought this for throwing, this axe is terrible for that. The blade has a very large draft and so the main body is like ~.25” thick right after the edge. Axe being that thick and light simply bounces off of everything I throw it at.On the other hand this blade-body combination makes it fantastic for chopping wood by wedging itself into wood. The axe is very durable and can take a beating. It also comes with a fire starting device if you loose your lighter or just want some fireworks.Overall great product just not for throwing.

Quality hatchet, comfortable handle - Very pleased with my purchase!
I've watched videos, read reviews...pretty much "reviewed" out on selecting a hatchet. I settled on the Schrade SCAXE2 and I am highly pleased. If you want the manufacturer specs, the seller has those posted. As far as the actual specs, here you go. The "usable" handle length is about 9.5". Yes, the handle is longer but, I am referring to the usable portion. The curved blade is 3.75" (straight line measurement from tip to tip). The hammer head is 1.5" x 0.75". The overall "usable" specs make it a decent size to hang from a belt, vest, backpack, etc. It is not bulky or overly heavy (it is a hatchet after all) and after using it to chop up some 2-2.5" branches that had fallen in the yard, I didn't feel like I was swinging a bowling ball around at all. The handle has finger placements built in and is rubber which equals comfort. It also softens a mis-swing a little. Call it recoil padding. :) The rubber handle also prevents slipping. The blade is sharp and nitrite coated. After a few uses, really not a scratch on it other than the blade edge. Clean and oil and I am sure the blade/head will last for many, many years to come. I didn't order it for the fire starter but, it's an added bonus for sure. Mine fits quite snug in the handle of the hatchet and took a little effort to pull out. After using the hatchet, it did not loosen up a bit. Personally, my theory is, leave the fire starter there...unless you need it. No need to pull it out...stuff back in, over and over. The cover/carrying case is definitely a neat concept, although I have to wonder how long it will last. It covers the head perfectly and easily fits on a belt but, it does seem to be a little on the lightweight side. Only time will tell...for now, it works fine and I like the design of it. I've read reviews of cold weather handle breaks, etc. I live in the south. Not a lot of cold weather here...so, should be fine. In the light to medium use that I put it through, the handle seemed to be just fine. This is a solid, comfortable small size hatchet that is perfect for general use, backpacking, camping, or even survival situations. Very pleased with the quality for the price!
