Gamblin Oil Painting Ground 8 oz.

I use this to tighten the canvas and for a smooth finish then lightly rub sandpaper on it for grip. Its awesome for saving brushes.

Works good on canvas

I have used high quality acrylic gesso for my oil paintings but I decided to try this for a change. It's wonderful. I applied it with a palette knife in thin applications. They dry in a few days if you keep the layers thin and don't mix paint into the ground for tint. Both will extend the dry time. It took a little adjusting to, the paint doesn't slide on the ground, and using oil vs thinner to get the proper consistency is important. The ground is excellent for dry brush techniques. Overall I love it, yet it is definitely different from acrylic products. (This is just the background for the painting, so it's not complete)

Works real good

As a person who has been painting in oil since college, graduated in 1981, I always wondered why the acrylic gesso wasn't working for me… I did start painting in acrylic so I knew the medium… but couldnt figure out how others waren't having my problem… and why my oils looked like acrylic… Anywho when I discovered this, an oil based gesso, I went doh?!?! Why hadn't anyone told me about this, especially my instructors at SVA,where I went… Now this item works beautifully. My complaint is the lid that covers it, the metal lid's edge, is a bit flimsy. And could be a problem in the future when I want to reopen it and or close it… basciallly worrying that the contents might dry out.

I don't do oil paintings without this anymore. I use a first layer of gesso (1 or 2 layers sanded), and then I'll do at least 2 layers of ground (without sanding). The ground surface is a bit glossier than gesso--very luxurious!

This is really good stuff. I use it to cover paintings I don't like. it covers with one application I do mix it with odorless mineral spirits to speed up drying. I will definitely buy again.

Good use of primer ground for oil painting.

Incredible! I'd been using the W&N oil primer for a few years, and due to unavailability, I tried this brand this time... and there is simply no comparison. A tiny little bit goes a long way. I just primed 22 canvases and panels (one large, six medium, the rest on the smaller scale) and didn't even use a quarter of the tin. You can thin it out with light use of mineral spirits, and let all that dry; apply a second coat in the same method if you want more coverage, depending on what's underneath. I'll be using this brand permanently from now on. So good!
