Description
Rosa canina is a deciduous climbing rose, with hooked thorns, which assist it to climb up vegetation and rocks etc. It will grow to 5 metres or more and will scramble or climb up many structures or other plants.
A native of Europe, North Africa and Asia minor, it provides interest throughout the growing season from the fresh green leaves, the scented flowers borne in summer, to the oval red hips it produces in the autumn.
Whilst not strictly speaking a repeat flowering rose, it has a very long flowering season and it is often possible to see flowers and hips on the same plants.
The flower are single with 5 petals and are a shell pink in colour, although across its range this colour varies slightly usually related to the soil in which it is growing.
