My First Book About Our World

My First Book About Our World is the only workbook I could find for a 3 year old to introduce basic geography concepts. When a child cannot write yet, stickers are a good way to do workbooks. Though this workbook is not perfect, I am grateful it is on the market for our family.First, I thought it was odd that the workbook did not address forests, when all the other major ecosystems were included. Especially when there is a forest sticker on page four and a forest is on the front cover. There simply is no reason to skip forests.Second, I felt it was odd to have a volcano on the book's cover and a volcano sticker on page 4, but never discussed it. That crosses into false advertising, because showing the volcano on the front cover makes buyers believe that the book would talk about land formation, volcanoes, earthquakes, and mountains. You expect a page or two on basic plate tectonics/geology, but no - this book does not go there.Third, there were many choices that missed learning opportunities. If you have kids match a label of a word to the word on the page, then they did not learn where the label went or the concepts behind its placement - all they did was match letters and maybe even only the first letter at that. Not very effective.Lastly, the book ended up with less stickers than I expected. You would think that over 100 stickers is more than ample, but it was not. See below:Pages 2-3 have no stickers. SHOULD have shown the entire globe (both sides) and put all the continent names on. (Note the back of the book wrongly labels stickers for this page.)Pages 4-5 matches objects to their names & shadows. There are 17 stickers. (Note the stickers are labeled for pages 2-3 but actually go on this page).Pages 6-7 matches objects to their names & shadows in the water cycle. There are only 4 stickers. SHOULD have had stickers for the weather page.Pages 8-9 have no stickers. SHOULD have had stickers to label which image was which season and maybe stickers to put a key item in each image like a bird nest, sun, fall leaves, and hibernating animals.Pages 10-11 have 12 stickers. They match 5 animals to their shadows & names. Match seven words. The valley is not very clear and matching words instead of leaving blank boxes means kids are not really thinking about where to label things and if that label is correct.Pages 12-13 have 18 stickers. They match animals to their shadows and names. Then they match the names of the five major oceans. SHOULD have left the boxes empty so kids had to think about which ocean name went where.Pages 14-15 have 8 stickers. They match animals including corals to their shadows and names. There were more fish on the page that could also have been stickers.Pages 16-17 have 4 stickers - match animals to their shadows & names. SHOULD have labeled the emergent layer, canopy, understory, and forest floor as the image was perfect for that.Page 18-19 have 5 stickers and only for the Savannah page. SHOULD have had stickers for the desert page as well.Pages 20-21 have 5 stickers and only for the Arctic page. SHOULD have had stickers for the antarctic page too.Pages 22-23 label buildings in town. SHOULD have used blank boxes so the child would have to think about where the labels went. The pages left out these buildings: bank, place of worship, grocery store, residence, city hall, shop for clothes etc. The building labeled "shop" looks more like a bakery and should be labeled as such.Page 24 labels oceans and continents by matching names. SHOULD have not told kids where each sticker went so they had to think about where it went. This is especially important at the end of the book when its a review of what was learned.Overall, because the book is so prescribed as to where everything goes... it is only appropriate for kindergarten and under. It would also need to be done with an adult so the adult could read the material and explain it to them before putting on the stickers.

Cute book! We're using it in prek/k homeschool just reading a page a day, adding the stickers, and talking about the world. It's very little-kid oriented :)
