It will help strengthening fingers for any instrument. We sell a lot of them for all types of instruments.

Don't have the regular. Easy to work with my arthritis.

All instruments that use really any kind of finger work would benefit from this tool.

Q: What tension should I go with for my 5 year old beginner piano player?

I would start with the lightest possible tension. I used these exercisers when I was recovering from a significant hand injury. (I’m a cello player.) I was able to gradually move to the higher tension products. I preferred this particular brand of hand exerciser because it has what I called “trumpet” keys. The finger tips are on the keys, the device is easy to hold, and the fingers are curved when pushing down. Easy to use; easy to progress. Other exercisers I tried (lots) were too difficult to hold, and most had tension that was too hard for my hand. Definitely recommend this exerciser, but start with the low tension, if you can find them!
