THE Classic in Math Notation
At nearly 900 pages, the price of this book for what you get is awesome. For a comprehensive review of this field and a list of a number of related texts, both costly and inexpensive, see our review of Chrisomalis' Numerical Notation: A Comparative History . You can click see our other reviews to quickly find this if you'd like a longer review of the whole field today. This was originally published in 1929 in two volumes, both of which are available here on Amazon, but the present work is a less expensive combination of both. Stephen Wolfram jokes in a recent article that he was asked to give a speech on how computers interpret math symbols, and was the second choice for the talk until the organizers realized the author of THIS text has been dead for 70 years!Well worth acquiring for any math historian or general reader interested in the history of math notation. The Menninger classic and others are mentioned in the Chrisomalis review above, but that text, though now the "bible" of math notation and covering the whole field in an encyclopedic fashion, is a pricey $90.
