Noxious Gasoline Smell
I just received this last week. The hot water bottle does its job but the smell is like gasoline and got stronger over the first few days of use!!! The bottle and the covers are soaking in washing detergent as I type in the hope I can dissipate the pungent gasoline smell. I'm unclear as to whether it's the bottle that has transferred the rubber/gasoline smell to the covers, or the fact that the covers arrive packed in the same plastic packaging as the bottle and as a result the smell has transferred from the bottle to the covers! Either way, if the noxious smell can't be eliminated, it will go in the garbage.

High Quality but very Smelly so far
I went out on a limb and bought 2 of these without seeing the product first because it seems to be next to impossible to find actual rubber hot water bottles in stores in my area now.PRO'S:-- It appears to be a high quality water bottle with a metal spout and a sturdy plastic with thick gasket stopper. I don't anticipate any functional problems with it.-- I like the way it has ridges on one side and is smooth on the other.-- This is my preferred size water bottle (over some of the larger ones sold)-- The covers may be a nice addition - I have never used covers on hot water bottles before but have suffered burns from too-hot bottles. But I've not tested them on the bottle yet to know. They are darned cute that's for sure and very plushy fleece.CONS:-- Being made of rubber (which I wanted) this bottle smells very VERY strongly just like the inside of a tire shop. I ordered another larger rubber bottle that was made in Germany and it did NOT smell this strongly, so I have to assume that there are chemicals or additives used in the processing of this rubber that might not be healthy. That worries me and is the reason for the 4 stars instead of 5. I've let the bottle sit out for a couple weeks, sometimes with hot water in it, sometimes empty, and so far, no decrease in smell. If it does not dissipate soon, I will consider them not usable.

Meh: Smells bad, covers don't fit well and are too insulating to be practical. Odor may dissipate gradually
Well, for one the smell is terrible, for another the covers are very tight and don't fit over the bottle easily at all (they aren't very stretchy. It's a hot water bottle, and the prints are cute, but as others have said, you can't feel the warmth through the covers very well and the odor is a bit much. My older drug store hot water bottle never smelled like this - like a new tire or something. It does appear to be very sturdy, with the opening made of metal rather than just being pressed into shape from the same material. If you leave the cover off, you can feel the heat, but then why pay extra for the covers if you can't use them? The smell may slowly get better as it off gasses, but washing does not help it.

Will stick with empty soda bottle
I grew up sleeping with hot water bottle, so when we made decision not to turn the heat on at winter time here in Arizona, i figured this would be a good alternative to warm up those cold sheets before bed.The good point of this hot water bottle was it's price and what you get for the money. Growing up in Europe, we never had covers for them, so i thought these covers are a nice touch, and they were the reason why i decided to purchase this model over some others.Sadly, as cute these covers are, once put on, they diminish the heat factor to the point of uselessness. They simply don't work.In Europe we used to boil water on the stove, pour it in, and put the bottle in bed, so they would heat through the night. This hot water bottle instructions suggest hot tap water, but due to thickness of the rubber, this just doesn't warm up nowhere enough to do any good. And if on top, you slip one of the covers on, you will get no use from it.So i used it for couple of nights without covers, with hot tap water. After going to bed and getting greeted by cold sheets, i went back to our traditional, proven method: an empty soda bottle.Soda bottle, filled with hot tap water, heats up tremendously, and holds heat quite long, so we just continued doing that. not to mention that this method is completely free.I am not sure what my daughter ended up doing with this hot water bottle, but i haven't seen it in months. The smell didn't bother me, these are prone to strong rubber smells, and i am quite used it.
