So two 4 inch thick mattresses?

I bought two 6 inch mattresses and it goes to the very top of the daybed. I'd say the 4inches would be better

Just two twin mattresses. The two mattresses are stacked on top of each other when it is a daybed. When it is pulled out it becomes a king bed, with both mattresses side by side.

Can you store one mattress under the bed?

Since there are drawers under the bed there is no room for a mattress. I just put both mattresses on the daybed. It is a little tall but not too bad and I am short.
