Are these easy to slip into shoes and boots or do you have to fight to get them in?

It depends a lot on the shoe. I fold mine long ways while sliding it in my shoe. Then I just smoothing every thing out. Some shoes seemed like less of a fight than others. However, the insoles really helped my foot while I was healing from a fracture.

Are the bottom of these hard plastic?

No, the whole insert is soft and flexible!!! Very good buy, I want them for all of my shoes!!!
