Hand Cubed Sicilian Candied Citron (Cedro) 12 Ounce Container Fresh Never Pre Packaged

Very very nice. When I decided to make a fruitcake this year for the first time in 20 years, I discovered that it’s become very difficult to find the essential candied fruits that are only used in fruitcakes. I tried three stores, and only found the cherries, and, in one case, a “fruitcake mix”. If you are reading this, I need speak no farther of the nastiness of that cra- ‘stuff’. I managed to make my own lemon and orange peel, but was stumped at citron. At first, I considered leaving it out, as my recollection of it was that adding it added nothing but an hazard to teeth. However, my sister reproached me, and so off the Amazon. I am glad I did. This is very different than the hard little chunks you get in the grocery store round tubs. It is soft, a delicate green, and flavorful. Now I wish I ‘d gotten all my fruits this way and will absolutely do so in the future. In fact, I am already planning on hot cross buns so as to use the balance of this citron while fresh. I do not think you should plan on saving what you don’t use in your fruitcake “for next year” or even “sometime”. What makes this delicious is the gentle processing and lack of whatever makes the roundtub stuff capable of outlasting the millennium. For the few dollars extra you’re spending on the cost of a fruitcake these days (!), I would simply plan on using Amazon to quickly deliver a fresh batch next time rather than trying to save this and losing what makes it special in the process.

What a revelation. The supermarket type of citron has about as much to do with this fresh citron as hot dogs do with steak. This citron is flavorful and soft, not bland and rubbery as is the prepackaged kind. I’ve ordered it three times over the last two years and have not been disappointed. It’s well packaged and shipped promptly. I also froze some leftover citron last year and it held up very well. The really dramatic proof for me was when I didn’t have enough of this citron in the middle of a baking frenzy and had to supplement with the supermarket kind. I’ll never do that again! It’s rather pricey, but if you care about the quality of your finished product, it’s worth every penny.

We taste tested these against 3 other citron purchased this year. This was much more flavorful than the rest. All had a similar texture but this had that burst of flavor you want it to have to bring out the flavor in your recipes. We had a hard time finding this ingredient this year for our annual preparation of our family recipe of German stollen(made every year for generations) So we ordered 4 kinds not knowing if any would arrive on time. We ended up getting them all in time so did a taste test. This one tasted the best and is likely part of the reason this years loaves taste so amazing. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

Edit 12/2025 -- great customer service, they refunded my purchase and said while the batches were checked and were to their standards. to get the freshest batch per year to email them and then order. I absolutely plan on repurchasing from them Edit 11/2025 -- Have bought this product several times in the past. The product was nice and fresh, more green. The one I received this year tasted stale, and yellowish and not fresh at all. Tasted VERY stale. Seems to be a hit and miss. Won't be buying anymore, especially since its a non-returnable product. 2023: Bought this because it's near impossible to find candied citron without any chemical ingredients, sulfur, silica benzoate etc., unless of course you make yourself Here are the ingredients for this product: Important information: Ingredients (Citron Peel , glucose -fructose syrup, sugar, citric acid.) and love the fact its only packed when it is order, 1 year expiration date from packed, and you can keep in fridge. Will absolutely buy again. And will highly recommend to anyone seeking candied citron made as if you made yourself, no chemicals like sulfur, silica etc. A bit pricey, but as its a quality product, worth the money.

I forgot to leave a review right after I received this product because it was the holidays and life was hectic. I purchased this to use for a specialty family pie that I make at Christmas because I could not find the candied citron at my local supermarket. I was a little skeptical, purchasing it online, but I had no other choice. Not only did it arrive much quicker than was expected, the quality was amazing! The date that it was prepared was two days prior to me receiving it. I will continue to use this in the future, and I am extremely satisfied! The taste was wonderful and really made a difference in the pie!

This is the freshest, softest most delicious citron, a game changer for my holiday baking. I had no idea candied fruit peel could taste good by itself. That mixed stuff from the grocery store I grew up on does not compare. Update: The product was very different this year than the first time I bought it. Doesn't look the same, taste the same, have the same texture, and didn't come in a good container like last time. I'll still use it but its not amazing like before.

I had no idea what I've been missing all these years using the usual store brand of citron. This product appears to be hand packed, fresh, and not packed in that yucky syrup, just citron at its best! It's softer than the hard tiny pieces of that store brand, and the flavor, well, I never knew citron was so good. For decades I've only bought citron once a year as one of the ingredients I add to my Christmas saffron bread. I like this citron so well I will be using it in other ways in my baking, and probably nibbling on it as a snack just because it's that good!
