In my experience recharging NI-Mh in place of alkaline batteries is the way to go.

Q: How does this compare to a 40w corded soldering iron ?.

The MFG claims 120 min of continuous operation. I used the device for almost an hour turning off power in between solder joints. I believe an hour should be no problem.
