Shibori Designs & Techniques

Fabulous Book
Wow! This Shibori book is remarkable. It has tons of photos, instructions and a wide variety of unique and interesting dyeing suggestions. Shibori books and instructions normally stick to using indigo dyes but this book opens up a whole new world of possibilities. I am so pleased with this purchase.

trys too hard to be too many things in too few pages
I'm coming from the point of someone who knows a bit about shibori, has some experience dyeing on various fibers using various techniques. I have a degree in textile design so I probably know a bit more than your average joe. This is a decent overview of shibori. It covers various types, and does a brief section on each technique and shows pictures of the various steps. The photographs are well done and the instructions are clear. The author covers both acid dyes (silk- protein fibers) and fiber reactive dyes (cotton, cellulosic fibers) but sort of jumps around alternating techniques in silk and cotton. The author never goes into detail about the dyes just sort of gives this weird general information..so she might talk about illuminating dyes but only for silk...which leaves you wondering if there is an equivalent for cotton. She really focuses on the resists-- so if you have never dyed fabric before this book will not give you much technical information by way of ratios and recipes, but you can easily find those things online. The author/publishers were trying to hit all the marks for the average hobbyist but it just sort of grazes them instead. I learned a few things I did not know such as capping with cellophane (can't find the book right now i'm going from memory) but I honestly wish I had just spent the extra money to get the more serious books. I certainly didn't get any real tips on what might go wrong in a project-- you would have no idea what happened if you did stitched shibori and lost your design-- which happens! Qualities of dye and cloth, working with thickened dye are all things that would have been great if she had gone in to just a LITTLE bit of detail about. So I can't really recommend the book if you are looking for serious technical information.

A little too advanced
Great book with easy to understand instructions. However, was a little too technical for my purposes. I just wanted simple instructions on tying methods for Shibori (specifically for t-shirts) and the best dye to use. It went above and beyond my needs, but I did learn something about the process of Shibori.

Good Tools for the Beginner
I was first drawn to Shibori from a book that jumped off the shelf at me in an art supply store a few years ago. I didn't know how I could actually learn to do them and circumstances were such that I didn't follow up on beginning, but deep down I knew I would eventually begin working with these techniques. This book has offered that opening - pictures aplenty with instructions under each. I'm visually oriented, and this helped alot! Her directions are primarily for the beginner, and have me wanting to advance. I'm glad I bought the book.

Good beginners with with some fun techniques briefly taught.
I was trying to figure out if learning Shibori was something that would interest me. In reading this book, I loved how the basics of a handful of Shibori techniques were taught in a wonderfully simple manner with stunning results.Would I buy it again, if I had a redo? I think so! It has definitely simplified learning some of the techniques of Shibori, and peaked my interest in learning some more, without overwhelming me with lots of pictures without instructions like another Shibori book I ordered at the same time.

Great Step-By-Step with Color Illustrations
As someone with some color mixing knowledge, I only needed to find instructions about certain fiber-reactive dye projects, but Mandy Southan's book gives you her expertise on quite a few different dye techniques with various fabrics. She does talk about color, but would rather you experiment or have fun with the colors instead of being scientific or measuring. Great color photos of the steps for each project and a of the final results. This book would be great for the beginning dye adventurer, but I would recommend seeking more knowledge about color mixing. Thanks for listening!

Comprehensive overview of techniques for beginners
This book contains a lot of basic information on a number of Shibori styles- great for those with an interest in a general overview of the various techniques involved. There are a number of small suggested projects that provide more than enough detail for a beginner to get started and try out a number of different styles. The instructions well laid out, easy to understand and the pictures are very clear. There is also a decent amount of information on fabrics, different dye types and fixing methods.I doubt this book would contain enough information for anybody already experienced with Shibori, but it's fantastic as an introduction to those who would like a comprehensive overview.

brilliant book
I agree with the other reviews, this is a great book. It has details of different fabrics, dyes and tying/wrapping techniques. Lovely colour photographs show the techniques, which are explained in a clear but comprehensive fashion. Shibori is such a huge area, with endless different styles of tying and wrapping but the book simplifies them, and shows, one to a page, how to re-create them. Highly recommended for beginners and improvers.

Good clear Instructions
Just starting out doing some Shibori and found this book to have nice clear instructions and pictures. Only just started with it, it looks fine so far.

Not too detailed
This book can give you some ideas , but it’s not very detailed . There is no recommendations for specific dyes , or what you should consider when choosing a dye. There is no explanation about what to pay attention for at each technique or what could go wrong...I believe if you like some suggested technique you try out and faced problems yourself and try differently next time...
