Q: Is this a true glow in the dark or do you need a black light to see it glow?

It is a traditional glow-in-the-dark, that is activated by being exposed to light (not black light / uv light).

it showed up well on dark brown MDF board, so maybe

I dont think it would, it's fairly thick fabric screenprinting ink

Q: How long does a jar last?

It depends on how much you use it. I had a white one I used for 20 shirts and I still have most of the jar. I can still use it and that was a few years ago.
