Great watch
This was for my son's 20th birthday. My first good watch was a Seiko I bought myself for my 20th birthday in the base PX in Kirch Goens, Germany. It lasted for well over 10 years. I still have the watch but no longer wear it. After I got out of the service I went to watch repair school and then spent 20 years in the business, so I'm picky about watches and I know what I'm talking about.Things to know:First, it is a mechanical watch and will never keep time like a quartz watch. So what? Will a few minutes a month end your world?Second, it has a stainless steel case that will still be around in 50 years (long after the watch is no longer repairable). The band is decent quality but not what you got from Seiko in the 60's and 70's.Third, ALL watches require regular maintenance, no matter what brand or type of movement. Remember, it is mechanical, like a car. Is the only money you spend on your car for gas?Fourth, this is a self-winding watch and needs to be worn all the time. It must also fit your wrist properly: Snug fit allows an automatic watch to wind itself. A loose fit defeats the auto-wind mechanism and the watch will NEVER run right. This is a watch, not a fashion accessory to be worn as a floppy bracelet. You want that? Buy a quartz watch. The reason most watches stop working is that the lubricants begin to break down, so they need to be cleaned. That means stripping out the old lube that has turned to shellac and re-lubing and adjusting the timekeeping. As the watch ages, a certain amount of wear will occur on the pivots of the wheels, which decreases the quality of operation. In other words, it won't keep time as well as when it was new. Also, gaskets break down and need to be replaced to maintain water resistance. If you want to keep your watch running, have it serviced when needed, and understand that it will never be a new watch again. Live with the degradation of accuracy or buy a new watch. For this price you can afford a new one.Bottom Line: This is a fantastic watch for the price, and if you appreciate fine mechanical devices, that's a bonus. This may not keep atomic clock time, but you won't be late for lunch. If as a rocket scientist you have to have split-second accuracy, buy a cheap quartz watch.

seiko 5 automatic
well this seiko showed up early and well packed with out a scratch on it. had all the right paper work with it and the warranty card. thank the shipping it came out all ready ticking. did not have to shake it up or wear it to set it. i really like the watch its simple but classy. goes with a lot of things can be dressed up or down easily. if your a guy that owns only a watch or two at a time this is a great choice works for jeans and still looks dressy enough to wear with a suit if you needed. it keeps very good time for an automatic i have noticed no gain or loss yet in three days. im sure it has gained or lost a second but not enough to ever make a problem. the face is nice and simple and the luminous marks last pretty long for a less expensive piece. i find my self wanting to wear this watch even around the house. good price, and good quality. even the snotty watch folks will admit seiko makes a good watch for the money.UPDATE: this watch is still working flawlessly and has become one of my favorites to wear. it gets compliments often. i didnt think it would since its not real flashy. the crystal is very tough a few times ive banged it and expected to see scars but none. i love the weight of this watch its hot in texas and a big heavy watch just makes your wrist nasty. id buy this one ten times over. im going to look at the same in watch in other colors.

My first automatic
I'm not well versed in the world of watches, so I'll just give my overall impressions of this watch after wearing it daily for nearly two weeks. First, this is a very attractive watch. The band and face are just right for me: not too big, but not small either.Getting an automatic watch (especially one in this price range) can mean not keeping the most accurate time. Or at least that's what I've read. This watch has been losing time daily since I originally set it. 45 seconds (give or take a sec) in about two weeks is the total loss. That will average out to roughly 2 minutes or less per month. I can definitely live with that.I'm not sure how the watch will fare in a year or two. I think if I do my part and not beat it up too much or submerge it in liquid of some sort it will be fine. The one negative so far is how many little scratches I've put on the steel watch band. Maybe I'm a little rougher on things than the average person though as I have a pretty physical job and also work at home often.Overall I'm pleased with this Seiko and probably will purchase another if needed in the future.

Stops randomly - useless watch. 2 months old
My watch constantly stops - making it useless. This is not due to a winding problem - it stops even while I wear it 24x7. Update - I've decides ready for trash can.. I've worn it for months now and it randomly decides to stop for an hour or nore and restart. This is while wearing it 24x7 except showering. This is my last Seiko. Apparently they have followed the herd in reducing costs to the point where their products barely function. Here is warrany wording - good luck with this assuming you have the certificate and ship the watch at your cost. My certificate was not filled in and is long gone.TO OBTAIN SERVICE DURING THE FIRST YEAR OF THIS WARRANTY, YOU MUSTPRESENT OR SEND YOUR WATCH TOGETHER WITH THE ENCLOSED CERTIFICATE OFLIMITED WARRANTY (WHICH MUST BE PROPERLY FILLED IN BY THE AUTHORIZEDSEIKO RETAILER WITH THE INDICATED INFORMATION AT THE TIME OF PURCHASE)Final update. It went in the trash today. Gave up on. I decided that no watch is better than a bad watch
