Q: Will this charger recondition a battery?

Three years ago I bought the Schumacher XC85-CA charger and still am delighted with it. It has successfully reconditioned two six-volt Optima batteries that other chargers would not resuscitate. Last year I bought the SC1362 since a needed a second charger too and its form factor seemed like the XC85 so I thought it was a newer model with similar capabilities. Wrong. It is only an adequate charger, but has failed to bring a dead battery back to life that the XC85 then succeeded on. If you can still find the XC85-CA, go with it. I realize Schumacher is an old and well-respected firm, but the SC1362 does not perform as well as the earlier XC85-CA.

Q: Does it have to be plugged into AC power to use the engine start feature, or is it fully portable?

Yes. This charger converts AC power to DC, but it does not include any sort of internal battery, so it does need to be plugged in.
