Hello, the dimension of the hose is 1/2” Inside Diameter (I.D.), 5/8” Outside Diameter (O.D.), thank you.

Q: does this create a ripple does this keep water still?

Sure, if you want a ripple, just lower the output flow either above the water line or below. If you want it still just lower the output even more, but not to close it off. I used it with a betta fish in a 9 gallon tank. I just lowered the flow so find won't rip. Hope this helps.

Q: Is there any room in the filter for bio balls or ceramic rings?

Yes, there could be. The interior consists of 2 plastic "separators" that create a space above the bottom of the filter and below the top of it; in between the separators fit the three colored sponge disc filters that you see in the photos. You could fit your favorite small-sized bio-medium in one of these spaces, outside the separators, or even remove one of the sponge filters for even more space. I did that in order to add activated charcoal to mine.Note, however, that once it gets up and running for a few weeks, the sponge discs do act as a substrate for biofilm, and you'll have biological filtration even without a specialized medium.
