An inspirational journey with powerful lessons
Dr. Hyatt's book tells a compelling story: how a woman with spiritual grit and tremendous resolve overcomes institutional and personal racism---not once, but multiple times. As a former professor, I can attest to the reality that racism thrives in the academy. There are many kind and fair professors and many good scholarly institutions. However, racism and bias lurk in even the best schools, limiting the life chances of many talented students, staff and faculty. What's unique about PUSHING is that it offers a prescription, a road map for dealing with racism and covert hostility. Dr. Hyatt harnesses the lessons taught by her faith to overcome these hardships and explains exactly how she did it, so you can use her wisdom to face your own challenges. Each chapter ends with a summary of the strategies she has used and questions inviting you to reflect how you might adopt them for yourself. Although the book is deeply grounded in Dr. Hyatt's Christian faith, it is also useful for those of other spiritual traditions. The principles she teaches are based in deep truths that transcend religious institutions. This means that both Christians and non-Christians with a spiritual inclination can come away renewed, inspired, and full of hope. I was especially moved by the chapter on the importance of nurturing both the body and the Spirit. It spoke so accurately to my own experience of losing myself in my work and ignoring my own needs that I felt Spirit was speaking to me directly through her words. I saw myself in her story in that moment, although I have not experienced racism as she and so many others have. It felt like a wake up call addressing my exact spiritual need. And although I am not Christian, I appreciated the wise Biblical quotes and excellent advice. If you would prefer a book that leans on the wisdom of a different spiritual tradition, this may not be for you. But of you are looking for wise and loving spiritual advice about how to overcome terrible adversity, and you are open to Biblical stories, this will be a good fit. I especially recommend it for anyone who has experienced bias, racism or harassment of any kind in a university setting. Just reading about how one woman became unstoppable was a great help to me.

for those who have dreams of reaching higher heights , this book is a must read !
Pushing takes its readers on the journey of a woman , Hilda, a registered nurse / midwife , from her native country (1985) where most people looked like her , where she was well respected and looked up to , to the United states of American , where she was completely blindsided by blatant racism , disrespect and condescension because of the color of her skin, and how she used certain principles to overcome these obstacles and reach her dreams .The writer offers unique perspectives , great insight and much candor in her expression of the horrendous obstacles and emotional toll that these acts of racism took on her life as she navigated through these trials and still being able to obtain her many degrees , most especially her doctorate degrees . pushing is an easy read , well written , extremely powerful, greatly motivating and highly inspiring , a must read for all who dare to dream big ! She proves that , with God on your side , a dream in your heart , as well as following the pushing principles , that dreams do come true !

A look at an unconventional response to racism in academia.
Dr. Hyatt’s book is a primer on how to use your inner resources, beliefs, integrity and unwavering faith to overcome tremendous obstacles. The racism she encountered in a large academic environment is real, and she responded to it in ways that might surprise the reader. Instead of striking out in a loud voice, or by bringing legal or institutional retribution against those who support racism, she kept her dignity and was not deterred on her quest for academic excellence and her doctoral degrees. Dr. Hyatt writes from the heart, and shares her story in a poignant way, so that the reader is sure to be impressed by her ultimate success and contentment. A fascinating read.

Compelling and motivating, Well-written
Pushing takes its readers on the journey of the author, a registered nurse/midwife. While the book discusses the author's experience of racism, disrespect and condescension in America, it is truly about teaching how to triumph even in these situations. The writer offers an open and honest perspective on her journey and the challenges she faced and overcame. First, PUSHING: A Midwife's Journey To Triumph is well-written, and it is an easy read. I found this book is compelling and motivating. The author not only shares her many experiences with racism but demonstrates that one can triumph, thrive, and achieve more than with God on your side. The author shares her principles that will not only guide but support and strengthen as you strive to attain your dreams.

Uplifting
Well written and inspiring read. The author’s experience is one that is too familiar and she sheds light on a topic that needs to be constantly addressed in order for continued changes to occur. Her principles of PUSHING are an encouraging path to guide all people who find continued resistance while trying to achieve their goals. An uplifting and motivating read. I look forward to her next book. I would definitely recommend this book.

Great tips and tools for success woven into a touching memoir
Wow what a great way to showcase seven principles for achieving goals despite the obstacles faced by the main character. I especially liked the review of key ideas at the end of each chapter along with thought provoking questions with a relevant prayer.

Inspiring and Transformative!
The book is a story of remarkable strength and character. The seven strategies outlined in the acronym of the title itself is a brilliant idea. The book relays stories that evoke painful emotions for the vulnerable and people of minority. However, the unwavering faith of the character subsequently proved the grace and favor God gives to everyone but especially to the underdog. You will never be the same after reading this book. PUSHING is a must read!
