I didn't notice earlier but if you look at the spec below you will see the voltage rating is 4.2 volts so you really won't be happy running them on 1.5v alkaline batteries. There are lots of rechargeable 3.7 volt, 14500 batteries available on Amazon that are the same size as a AA but will really make these shine the way they were designed to. Beware of battery companies claiming 2000+ mAH batteries for $1 each since most of them are actually about 300 mAH. There are a few reputable brands like Shockli that sell 800 - 1000 mAH 14500 batteries at a good price that will actually produce that much power and last many hours on a single charge.

Cree is the brand of the flashlight. Cree was one of the first LED bulb manufacturers to make the super bright lights and there are now many copy-cat companies. I have purchase a box or 2 of 5 of these each year for the last 3 or 4 years as I give them to family and friends. I recommend these as they are rugged and long lasting. I hope this helps

When you turn on this light, does it come on in the last used brightness mode, or does it cycle to the next brightness mode?

When you turn it on, it is not in the last mode it was running. It is in the next mode in the cycle. It cycles from high to low to strobe with each click, in that order. So if you have it on high and then turn it off. The next time you turn it on, it will be in low. The next time you turn it on, it will be in strobe. The next time it will be in high mode. I like to carry mine in high mode so the last mode it is in before I turn it off and put it away is strobe mode.
