Does the pole insert into the cover somewhere?

Yes, the cover has a pocket in which the pole goes into. Once inserted, you are able to easily take the cover on and off. I am personally very happy with it.

Can this garden balsam patio umbrella cover for 9ft to 11ft cover a 10ft square umbrella?

It should easily. We have a 9ft offset and when the umbrella is closed it has a generous amount of space. Also the quality is amazing! We love it!

How do you connect the pole to the zipper?

I'm not sure what the question is? What I do when I want to put the cover on is I insert the pole into one corner of the bag. I then lift the fully opened bag over the top of the umbrella with the pole and work the cover onto the umbrella. Once the cover is on the umbrella on the top, I pull on the cover to "fully seat it" on the umbrella and finally pull the zipper down. Hope this helps.
