Q: Are these sponge or something else? Round or flattened?

They are q tip material so cotton. One side is rounded and the other is kind of pointy.

Q: How well do these work when using to apply eye shadow? I was thinking about purchasing these to allow customers to try my full-sized eye shadow samples while eliminating contamination.

In my opinion, they are too hard. I have sensitive eyes, and the material is kind of scratchy and has no give like Q-tips do. I suppose for normal-eyed people, they would be fine, although I don't think that they spread very well because they were so hard. If someone were using them on my to test eye shadows, I would have to have them stop. Also, they felt very cheap to me, so I imagine that would say something to your customers. I bought a package of over 100 eye shadow applicators, basic black, on Amazon that work far better than these do. Hope this helps!

Q: Amazon - why is this item twice the price of that of other online retailers? Makes shopping less efficient having to shop many different places !

I'm not sure if the price is more. All I know is I had a problem finding them in the stores. For me, I do a lot of my shopping from home. It's just the convenience.
