Get Dirty: Now on Netflix and BBC―A Thrilling YA Sequel About Secrets and Revenge (Don’t Get Mad)

Gretchen McNeil’s Get Dirty picks up immediately where we left off in Get Even, which I read sooo many months ago and alas, I couldn’t remember much that had happened! The pain of reading too much! LOL! After some initial confusion as to who some of the secondary characters were, I was able to quickly get back into the story as the remaining members of DGM, Bree, Kitty, and Olivia try to figure out who the mysterious murderer is. And for the majority of the novel, poor Margot lays comatose in the hospital. But this time, the girls have backup, as more of their friends are initiated into the secret club of DGM. The killer is after the people the girls care for, so having some more of their friends at their side seems prudent even. In the meantime, poor Bree is basically put under house arrest, which pretty much leaves Olivia, Kitty, Ed the Head, John, and Logan to do some of the investigating. The stakes get raised in this one. There were so many secrets and suspicions being tossed at us, but it never felt overwhelming. I just wanted to read even faster to get to the bottom of this mystery. And the killer even starts to go after previous DGM targets! Add to that, it seems there’s a new DGM group in the works that continues the girls’ work in taking the bullies of the school down a notch. And just wow! This is the kind of book where there is literally never a dull moment! So much mystery! So much suspense! It has it creepy and eerie moments as well! And let’s not forget some romantic interludes with some of the characters as well! I definitely liked how things wrapped up in this one! I sooooo did not see this killer coming! I wanted to say I had an inkling of an idea…but then Gretchen totally takes me by surprise with a whopper of a reveal! And just wow! Nicely done, Gretchen! Perhaps my only complaint was not being able to remember the events of Get Dirty as well, which is basically my own fault! I either should’ve waited to binge this duology or try to squeeze a re-read in, which rarely happens these days! My biggest piece of advice here is to read Get Even and Get Dirty back to back because you will not be disappointed! Gretchen McNeil is a master of suspense novels and her books are not ones to be missed! Read them now! Overall Rating 5/5 stars

There's a satisfaction in knowing you had a mystery solved but the storytelling made you doubt your instinct. And that's what Gretchen McNeil does in GET DIRTY, the conclusion to GET EVEN. The book picks up with the same need-to-know energy as the first installment, and the stakes are raised for the characters. I enjoyed the addition of the perspective of Ed the Head, which gave the book a nice, new dynamic from the first one. The characters grew in their depth and motivations. Darkly funny and well-crafted, readers who enjoyed GET EVEN will be pleased with this conclusion. Recommended to readers who enjoy mysteries and thrills without a lot of chills, more madcap caper than scary, heart-pounding murder mystery.

Read the first book in the series and had to finish the story. Both books had me hooked from beginning to end, and I enjoyed every twist and turn.

Get Even was such a fun read, but because it was so Pretty Little Liars-esque, I was assuming this series would also go on forever, and I didn't really want to get that invested. So I was happily surprised when I found out that this series was just going to be a duology (for now?), and since I did want to see how this mystery is resolved, I decided to read the sequel. Get Dirty was really hard for me to get into. It had been a while since I read Get Even, and I have a horrible memory - I rarely remember what happens in a book, so when I'm reading a series, I'm always dependent on those mini-summaries and hints at the beginning, explaining what happened in the last book. And Get Dirty just didn't have enough of those hints for me, so I spent 75% of the book pretty confused about who was who and what had happened to them. I know that's kind of my own fault for not remembering Get Even, but I would have appreciated some more explanations of the first book in this one. Not remembering what happened in Get Mad made the mystery hard to follow. There would be references to past suspects and things DGM had found out in the first books that I didn't really understand. It was hard to figure out who to suspect when I didn't really know what had happened before. I still really enjoyed the mystery - the threatening atmosphere is well-done and kept me emotionally invested, but I just think I would have enjoyed it a lot more if I remembered all the clues from the first book. Even though I didn't remember much about them from the first book, I did really like the main characters. The stakes each of them has in this are very personal, and I liked reading about each girl's family dynamic and friend group. While I'm glad things were resolved in Get Dirty, the resolution was a bit of a letdown for me. The last scene is a bit anticlimactic because there's too much of an info-dump to justify the killer's motivations, and because there's no real showdown between DGM and the killer when they do find him - he just automatically gets arrested and that's it. And despite the info-dump, there were still some things that weren't clear to me - the motivation for the murders made sense, but it didn't really work for the disappearances or for attacking Margo. Get Dirty was a very mediocre read for me. I remember Get Even being a lot more fun and suspenseful than this one, but I did enjoy some of the same elements that I liked in the first book. If you enjoyed Get Even and want to see how it turns out, I do recommend Get Dirty, just don't have the highest expectations. And maybe, if your memory is as bad as mine, reread Get Even before starting the sequel - I think the story would have made a lot more sense to me that way.

I am an idiot who didn't realize this was a sequal to another book. Nonetheless, I really enjoyed the book. I think I would have obviously enjoyed it slightly more had I read the first book first. That being said, I just ordered it and will amend this with a 5 star if I think it's due. THis book was very similar to pretty liars but also different enough that I really enjoyed the fast pace of the book. It was definitely a thriller full of mystery and suspense. Easy and good read! Recommended.
