No you don’t need a cartridge

Q: What is the hose length?

The hose doesn't come out of the faucet more than a few inches, just as it's pictured, but because the arc of the faucet coil is so large, you can get a direct stream of water to every corner of your sink. This isn't the same a pulling a sprayer hose out of a hole in the countertop, but it's not as messy and you can cover the same area. Plus, it has a spray setting and if you need a very strong spray, there is a "power" button on the faucet head that makes the stream twice as strong in the regular or spray settings.
