Buy The Art of Rush: Serving A Life Sentence 1 by Syme, Hugh, Humphries, Stephen (ISBN: 9781684058693) from desertcart's Book Store. Everyday low prices and free delivery on eligible orders. Review: Quality. - What a lovely, lovely quality art book. It helps that I've been a RUSH fan for many many years, mind. Even so, there's details here I've never seen before - from artwork proposals to preliminary sketches, interior artwork now seen large. CD covers do not do this work justice, but here on heavy glossy paper the size of an LP album cover, the work shines. (Most reviews mention the weight of this book. It is in kilogrammes!) The little touches really show - the cover art of the book as opposed to the dustjacket, the tracing paper overlays, showing the differences between the original ideas and the finished product. And then there's the comments. Explanations and interviews about each album, from Fly By Night up to their final live album. An introduction by the much missed Neil Peart, showing the thought the detail and the wit that is so much of the band. Pages of comments at the end, from other artists explaining their favourite RUSH album artwork. And as an addendum in the last part of my updated book, some of the 40th anniversary artwork and a photo dedicated to Neil. It shouldn't therefore be a surprise for me to say therefore that this tome is thoroughly recommended to RUSH fans, as an appropriate summary of their work. But even non-RUSH fans can appreciate the imagery, some of which is now iconic. Review: A vast Rush history of album covers - Huge coffee table book. Listing all the art work done for most of the Rush albums done by Hugh Syme. Detailing how he created every iconic album cover and the inside art work. A real must for any Rush fan.

A vast Rush history of album covers
Huge coffee table book. Listing all the art work done for most of the Rush albums done by Hugh Syme. Detailing how he created every iconic album cover and the inside art work. A real must for any Rush fan.

Superb record of the collaboration between music and art.
Utterly superb. A must for any Rush fan. Covering their entire career in terms of artwork. It doesn't contain everything (I would have liked singles and promos to be included), but this is just an amazing book. Hugh Syme is a talent and this really showcases his work for Rush and how it has developed with the band over the decades of collaboration. If you don't have this book, buy it now. You'll not regret it.

Stunning piece of work.
Bought as a gift for a Rush fanatic. The book is beautifully put together, telling in detail the stories of the albums as they came together - I’m sure he will be over the moon with it - great pics & amazing memories.

4th member in top form.
Superb book. Great artwork throughout and the stories and thoughts behind them. Long known by fans and the band themselves as the 4th Rush member as he was with them from Caress to the end. My copy was sliding about in a ridiculously oversized box but arrived unscathed. $99 sticker on rear and mine cost just £26, absolute bargain.

Great but could be magnificent
If you are a Rush fan this is for you. However it would have been better if more cover art was in the book. Inside sleeves, back covers, Fly by Night lyric sheet for example. Don’t let that put you off though, it’s still a great book.

As a 45 year Rush fan who saw them many times in concert and owns their complete catalog I couldn't wait to get my first copy of this book which I have now had for several years. This newly revised revision is every bit as classy with extremely high quality materials and printing as the original. I would recommend this for any rush fan who wants to learn more about the process that they went through in the art side of their business. One thing I would love to have is a Kindle version of this book which I think would be a fantastic companion to the hardcover book. Trying to read this hardcover book from front to back is very difficult because of its massive size and weight and I'm also reluctant to damage pages with bending, spilling a drink, etc. To be able to read this in a kindle format which would allow me to easily digest all of the information and yet still be able to refer to the hardcover and its beautiful artwork would be the best !!

This is a must for any fan of Rush album art. I have always loved Hugh Syme’s work and loved the continuity and symbolism through the albums covers and liners that only True Rush Fans would catch or understand. I enjoyed the quality of the book and the insight into what went into the taking the pics or ideas of the images and how they came to be. Now where can I get a larger print of some of my favourite pictures for the home office!?!
