Star Trek Volume 1

New Trek reimagines Classic Trek, 3.5 stars...
I wish I'd discovered the existence of IDW's comic series continuing the adventures of the Enterprise crew introduced in the 2009 re-boot -- it would've made the long wait for this year's sequel Into Darkness slightly more palatable. *wink* This first volume contains two stories, both based on episodes from the Classic Trek series -- "Where No Man Has Gone Before" and "The Galileo Seven." While my knowledge of all things Classic Trek is minuscule when compared to my love for the J.J. Abrams-helmed reboot, I love the idea of revisiting old tales and giving them a fresh spin with the new faces of the franchise. Therefore this post will be limited to my impressions of the stories as is, as I'm not yet in a position to compare this volume to the stories in their original, scripted television form. The first story, "Where No Man Has Gone Before," is an excellent showcase for a still-green Captain Kirk to adjust to his new position and responsibilities on the Enterprise. There is some tension between his old, fun-loving Academy friends and his new crew mates, and Kirk's attempts to reconcile his well-known party-boy persona with his new responsibilities feels very much in keeping with Chris Pine's portrayal of the younger, brash Starfleet officer. The story ends on a fantastic note for fans of the Kirk-Spock friendship, as the ever-logical Vulcan responds to Kirk's difficult decision with an unexpected overture of friendship -- I loved that! The second story, "The Galileo Seven," features a more assured Kirk and instead focuses on this more human incarnation of Spock and his struggle to relate to and command respect from his wholly human subordinates. Anytime Spock is tested, pushed outside his comfort zone I'm going to love it, and this story delivers, including the Vulcan reaching a welcome accord with one wryly cynical doctor. :) It's nicely-done tale showcasing Spock's leadership skills and Kirk's loyalty to his crew.Featuring gorgeous, detailed artwork, this volume not only fulfills my need to see more of the New Trek crew between their film appearances, but leaves me more eager than ever to continue my exploration of the Classic Trek television show.

Re-imagined and re-vitalised.
Adapting the original series episodes with the "new" crew may seem like heresy to some, but this collection from IDW breathes new life into these stories.Featuring "Where no man has gone before" and the "Galileo 7" it's a slim volume but well worth checking out, the re-imagining updates some of story elements for a modern audience and makes them fresh whilst still remaining faithful.Characters react differently and in the case of the first story a certain character is missing altogether, but it didn't matter as the the teleplays are adapted so well and suit the new interpretations excellently.Even if you only try this out of curiousity as I did, you'll be pleasantly surprised at how good this is.Hopefully further issues will continue to build on the new movie continuity without falling foul of it as DC did in the 80's.

Five Star Trek
I ordered the product as a little gift to myself, as it was on offer. I shopped around online and it was the best deal available. The product arrived promptly and in good condition. The stories and artwork were of a consistently high standard throughout, spinning exciting new and surprising tales from original series season one episodes. The characterization, both in terms of likenesses and writing, were all well defined and fitting. Well worth a read for anybody who loves the original series of Star Trek or the J J Abrams movie / alternate timeline. Highly recommended.

Kirk and the amazing colour-changing eyes...
Received the book this morning, read it through in half an hour and I did enjoy it overall. Nice comic style, good short stories. There were a couple of points that really bugged me though...1. Kirk's amazing colour-changing eyes; one page they are brown (and clearly like Shatner's NOT Pine's) then the next they are blue. It was like the artist would suddenly remember who he was suppose to be drawing and would correct it, then forget again on the next page!!2. Particular emphasis on the Spock/Uhura relationship - I want adventure and space travel (and I want a stoic, seemingly emotionless half-Vulcan, not a sappy romantic, happy to suddenly show all emotions right from the off half-Vulcan)...though that isn't so much the comic, more a personal opinion about the whole reboot!Anyway, good comic but it's not a keeper for the collection...(will be putting it up for sale this afternoon!)

Must read reviews.
I purchased this book thinking I was getting a paperback of the newest Star Trek story. Did not realize it was a comic book and not the storyline I expected. I have not shopped much at Amazon and have learned a valuable lesson for the future. Always read the full description (this one did not say it was a comic book) and all the reviews. Others were disappointed by the fact that it was a comic book and not happy about the storyline. I just usually check to see if the seller's rating is good and thought that indicated quality. In this case Amazon is the seller, so maybe people just complained and either returned the item or kept it as a lesson learned. I am sure I will enjoy the book because it is about Star Trek, but over $11 dollars for a comic book--ridiculous.
