Has the manufacturer made any improvements to the product based on the consistency of complaints regarding the weakness of the strap and design flaws?

I've had mine for two years. Take it to NC twice a year. Modified it with a sonotube insert as well as a plywood divider 2/3 down. Load it with 4 rods, all tackle, bait, fold out chair, rod holder, etc. Absolutely no issues. Silly people write silly reviews. Get one.

Is the inside storage opened from the end or is it a zipper on the side like a duffle bag?

It's really cool. I'd say more like a duffle bag. But it has a lot of storage pockets.

Does the kit come with a fishing rod?

No this is a canvas case to hold fishing rods and assorted items used in fishing
