Thank you Jeff
Jeff is very honest, articulate, insightful, knowledgeable, self aware. He is my newer Yossarian. His response to Niel Sheehan statement, "they'll never be able to do this again."Jeff disagreed..."they learned that failure can be ignored". Jeff... you are correct...wtf.

great memoir
This memoir captures most of what the army is like in war. It doesn’t cover the infantry’s perspective, but remember while the infantry sustains 90% of the casualties, it’s a relatively small part of the overall forces. This memoir also sounds a lot like Catch -22 . Both books capture the lunacy of war and the stumble bums who end up in charge. It’s a great read

Realistic, from the eyes of one there.
Interesting in the honesty of much soul searching, even after fifty some years. The explanations of the personal perspective is refreshing, acknowledging the personal vision directing his actions had never seen before.May you find peace now and in the future.

Trying to hide from reality
It appeared that Danzinger had about 20 transfers in VN, which backs up his statement that he was not a particularly good officer. The book was fairly well written and factual. I don't think J would be interested in reading another book by the author.

awesomely cynical
It’s amazing the author found himself in a war after trying to avoid it for years. Amazing the author think there’s going to be World War III I think so too all right good read thank you

Among the very best Vietnam memoirs, and I've read them all.
I've read every single Vietnam soldier's / journalist's memoir -- in my effort to understand the surreal monstrosity of the Vietnam war -- and this book ranks right up there with Herr's "Dispatches" and Ward Just's "To What End." The fact that Tim O'Brien praises the book is all the more evidence that the folks who look for the best writing on Vietnam have found it here, in Danziger's book. The book addresses -- with genuine sadness -- the loss, waste, and bungling of the war, and reveals (no surprise) the bottomless corruption of the leadership involved...and its consequences on so many lives. An essential book for anyone interested in our Vietnam, and potential "Vietnams" of the future.

Tragic juggernaut
Long ago and far away with other tragedies in between then and now. War is hell. The stories, so to speak, recounted by Jeff Danziger, are informative and, in many cases, a nutshell history of the results of decisions from the 1950s, on. The chapters provide a viewpoint from which to consider the entire era. What you see depends on where you’re standing. LT Danziger shows us where he was.
