A really nice and compact mechanical keyboard with great lighting options, switch types and caps.
Have had a few mechanical keyboards over the years and this one really ticks all the boxes for me, the lighting is very even, with controllable brightness, a good choice of patterns if you enjoy that kind of presentation, I just left it on the white backlight and it looks nice and clear. Key presses feel good and make the sound one expects from mechanical switches, plenty of choices here regarding type of switches and caps, they are all user replaceable so you can swop and change both switch and cap to suit, and best of all if a switch should fail, you can just lift it from the base unit and replace with another of choice from a great selection of switches and caps available on Amazon. Customer service was quick to respond and sorted out some issues I had trying to optimise the keyboard to my specific requirement, the usual pains when trying to get the keyboard to do exactly what you want and I have to say that their technical service is the best experience I have had to date. Thank you RK. Only time will tell how the keyboard will perform in the coming years but I am happy to know that I can replace the usual suspects when they fail but for now I am most impressed by the build, value and feature set of this unit. Well done RK.

My Favourite Keyboard
Over the last few months I have been through about 12 different Mechanical and chicklet style keyboards on a seemingly never ending quest to find the perfect Keeb. I still haven't got there but this one was my absolute favourite of all of them. I had the Red switch version and it was lovely. The switches were nicely lubed so weren't too loud and didn't feel gritty. The stabilisers were a touch on the loud/lose side, louder than my Keychron K8, but not at bad as some I have tried out at all. There wasn't too much in the way of pinging from the case so I suspect there MAY be some sort of sound deadening in there but I don't know as I didn't open the case to check. It would have been nice to have seen PBT keycaps rather than ABS but at this price point that's fairly rare so I can't really deduct any points for that however adding a cheapo set of PBT keycaps would bring this board up to the £100 range and I still think that would be a fair overall price for it. You get Bluetooth connectivity for upto three devices which works without a hitch. I switched it between my work laptop and person gaming PC daily and it is quick to change and respond. If you leave the board alone for a bit it will switch off the BT to save battery and like most BT boards there is a second or so delay in it re-activating and re-connecting but nothing as major as I saw with the Keychron mentioned earlier. Backlighting is decent and bright and has many different settings for how you want the lights to work or how bright they are and the colour. I personally liked the multicoloured one, I think it works well with the white. The board has many different media functions and things but I didn't test any of them as I don't care about that sort of stuff. I would imagine it works fine though, this is a very well put together board. The case does not have flick out feet but you do get magnetic feet which attach to the back. These work well and put the board into a really nice typing angle and if you want to game you can just flick them off and it's in a decent gaming angle. Kick out feet would have been better but this solution works just fine. There is a band around the case which you can remove so that you can have either floating keys or sunken ones, whichever floats your boat. It's pretty hard to get off but this means it's not lose and rattly, adding sound to the board. Battery life if good. I only had to charge it once. I think you get something like 10 hours if you have all the RGB going all the time but if you turn it off you will get many many more hours. Not sure of the official figure but you'll be good for a week or more between charges I would think. Also depends on how much you used it too. I think this keyboard is an excellent starting point in the world of mechanical boards. It's hot swappable so you can modify it to your hearts content, it's wireless so you can use it with multiple devices, it's got all the function and arrow keys so you don't need to worry about annoying modifiers and at the same time it's more compact than a traditional TKL board. There are some things which I would like to see improved, Options without backlight, Black option, PBT Keycaps and quieter stabilisers but overall this has been my favourite board out of all the mechanical ones I have tested so far.

Great product!
Great keyboard! Overall happy with the keyboard. Bought this keyboard a few years ago and it’s still functioning well with no issues even bought some compatible keycaps for the keyboard, the app that comes with the product has a lot of customisation options and macros that you can use. The sound quality of the red switches are very satisfying and genuinely nice to hear with a quick response time while gaming in competitive games. Overall really happy with this keyboard only thing I would say is the battery does run out quite quick after some years so you will have to keep it on charge a lot of the time.

Best keyboard
Keyboard feels and sounds really nice, perfect for gaming has a very low latency on wireless mode and bluetooth, small and compact so desk space needed is minimum, but still has all the important keys. The key caps i have on were bought separately from somewhere else, but there original white keys look super clean and feel very high quality, RGB lights also look amazing with good customising options on the software

Great portable mechanical keyboard
I wanted a solid, sturdy Bluetooth mechanical keyboard to pair with my tablet for those times I needed to write but was away from my desktop and wired Steelseries M400. I did have a Tecknet but the Royal Kludge is much better. Connectivity is excellent with both the Bluetooth and the wireless. You can also use it wired via the USB-C port but I tend not to. It charges up quickly enough and a full charge lasts for many hours. Whereas the Tecknet felt cheap and a bit flimsy, the RK is a bit like my Steelseries' chunky younger brother - built like a tank with satisfyingly tactile, clunky keys/switches. If it was stolen or lost or, more improbably, dropped by me into a murky canal, I would have no hesitation in buying another one immediately.

I like the size of the keyboard and the multiple connection options are really handy to make it easier for you to use it. The brown switches are great and more quiet than my others keyboard browns. Overall I think it’s a good choice and vfm.

Update 7/27/25: spilled something into the keyboard at some point which sat in the foam backing and did not evaporate, several keys got corroded pins and pin sockets and the color backlights went crazy. Completely disassembled and cleaned everything including using tiny wire brushes to remove corrosion. Nothing helped until I probed around with a continuity buzzer and suddenly the backlights were ok. However after reassembling now the bottom row of keys has a different color than the rest - when blue backlighting the bottom row is red, etc, etc. Ordered a new one but with brown switches instead of red. Update 5/3/25: after using it a while I find I do not like the short stroke red keys. I just can’t break the old muscle memory from using tons of long-stroke keyboards all of my career and I get false keystrokes due to my own fault. Update 7/23/24: replacement keyboard arrived today, charging as it should. I had to revert to my old Keychron K2A1 with the brown switches for the interval and now this feels like the stroke is shorter. Same quiet operation, silky feel, just a shorter stroke similar to the rkh81 that I liked so much. Update ~ 7/15/24: after a couple of days using it I realize it’s not charging. The battery capacity started out at 60% and I plugged it in and left it but never checked the charge current with a usb power meter. I did not notice the battery kept dropping until tonight when it hit 10%. When I plug it into a power meter the space bar blinks 3 times indicating it’s charging but it’s only taking enough power to light the backlights which work as expected. When I turn those off the power drops to 0ma. When I unplug it the backlights go out and the Fn+Enter doesn’t even light the 1 key indicating 10% charge remaining, I think that’s an energy conserving mode but the bluetooth connection works and the keyboard functions, at least for now. The charger in it must be defective, the battery certainly works, the wired power connection works, just no charging is going on and never has.. It’s being powered by a charging hub that has no problem supplying power to other devices, the power meter shows the supply voltage is 5.1v and zero amps. original ~ 7/10/24: With Red switches this is the second best keyboard I’ve ever used. The best keyboard is the RK-H81 with silver switches, it’s layout is slightly different and more exact to my muscle memory and the shorter throw of the silver switches I liked a lot but it has south facing leds which make shine-through keycaps unusable. Seems like a very stupid design decision and it wasn’t expressed anywhere in the listing. So an RK84 it had to be. I’m a retired programmer, I took typing in the 1960’s because it seemed like an easy class. Turned out to the be most important one I ever took. I became a teletype operator and then a programmer. The HP2621 terminal from the 80’s is my reference point, its keyboard is my ideal - the perfect reach, travel and spring pressure. And the RK-H81 came sooo close to improving on it, if not for the leds….. The RK84 layout is fine, I guess, but the keys are packed in for space’ sake rather than for the typist like the H81. I doubt the H81 designers were thinking of fast typists though, its south facing leds produce slightly nicer colored wave patterns so if that’s important then maximizing typing comfort probably isn’t. This RK84 is a solid, very useable keyboard. The RK-H81 is a mystery.

I've been using the Royal Kludge keyboard for three months now, and it has been an excellent experience! No issues so far—everything is still working perfectly. The battery life is impressive, lasting a long time between charges, and the overall build quality is solid. One of the cool features I love is that you can remove the frame to give it a slimmer look, which adds to its versatility. The typing experience is smooth, and the connectivity is stable. If you're looking for a high-quality, reliable keyboard, this one is definitely worth considering!
