Would this work for demo of a brick chimney?

Definately. I use it for ceramic tile and stone demo. You will need plenty of air tho. I use a large compressor for this

Would this work for grooving out cracks in concrete for patching ?

Yes indeed. I have done some work to repair concrete cracks and the tool works great. It's best if you have an ample air supply.

How difficult was it to get the spring on? I think this one might have bad threading because it doesn't seem to want to go on.

The spring has a rounded hook with a tab on one end to hold the shaft of the chisel loosely in place. That end is on top. The other end just has a tab. If you use the two tabs on the spring to twist it on and off the spring will thread more easily. The tabs relieve the tension of the spring.
