Is this about equivalent to the sol emergency bivvy?

I have not used the sol, but it is sturdier and will bear up under repeated use. Not like space blanket which tears easily. I have used it with my conventional bag as an outside cover and it works very well.

Yes, you could use it multiple times. It rolls up to about a 6 inch x 3 inch roll roughly, so it's compact and light weight. The material is nice and very thin, it gets the job done, keeping you protected and warm. I don't think it was intended to replace your primary bedding. It wouldn't be as comfortable as a down bag.

How do you get into this bag? Is it only open on the one end? Is there a side opening with velcro to close? A draw string at opening?

David, the bags are sealed on all but the top side. You pull it out of the storage bag, shake it out to expand, and then slide in from the top.

Could this be used as part of an emergency car kit for the winter in the midwest?

Live in Upstate NY,Have one in my car for that. I have used other mylars in cold conditions & they work ok. I would suggest adding a light fleece.
