Is the cast iron plate coated with a non-stick coating? One reviewer mentioned that it was easy to puncture the cast-iron coating, while another seemed to indicate that you could season this cast-iron plate like any other piece of cast-iron

The correct answer is that they offer a choice of 3 different versions of metal plates. One is a non-stick and looks like a Teflon type coating on it. That would not require any seasoning. In addition to non-stick plate option there are also a cast iron version which does need seasoning. It comes covered in a light coating of oil from the factory but you should wash that factory oil off thoroughly since it's there just to prevent rust. After you wash that factory oil off then you need to go through the seasoning process. The 3rd option is a cast aluminum plate. If you look carefully at the order page, you will see there is a drop down menu that allows you to select which version of the Grill Plate that you would like.

What exactly is the other side of the grill top like? Is it completely smooth on the other side?

One side has 1/4 inch ridges. The other side is flat with 2 circles about pancake size that take up most of the surface. Neither the ridges or the circles are very deep, about the depth of the spatula that comes with the grill.

Is the top solid cast iron or coated, please? i have read both.

It's coated!!! I just ordered it after reading all these answers that it's not coated. It is without a doubt coated and feels like there's a plastic layer on top. We have several cast iron pans and saucers, and none of them are smooth to the touch like this is, even the ones that came seasoned by Lodge. Arrived Sept 2018.
