This is an essential book for any freelancer's library.
The book is short but quite thorough. Poinier covers numerous facets of freelance pricing (and client relationships) that many people overlook. His advice is spot on. He acknowledges the reality of different rates for different projects and clients, as well as the need to budget for emergencies and so on. I highly recommend this book to any freelancer, new or veteran. If you get the chance, check out Poinier's blog and other books, too. I've found all of his writing to be very helpful.

A Must Read for New Freelancers
I found this book very direct and to the point about the realities of working for myself. One of the toughest things to do is to place a value on the services that I provide to other people. Learning to value skills is part science and part art. The balance between them that is covered masterfully in this book. A great deal depends on what the market will bear and your experience as an entrepreneur. This book provides practical methods for pricing services and is a good starting point for a freelancer to value his or her services. Just as valuable are some of the pitfalls to avoid when looking for clients.

A must-have for the freelancer
Excellent. Practical, down-to-earth information even a novice freelancer can put to use right away, with a touch of humor thrown in. "Dr. Freelance" gives solid advice on analyzing how much money you need to make, how to translate that into billable hours, and how to negotiate with clients so that everyone wins.

In the complicated world of freelancing where every client is uniquely nuanced in their payment methods, Jake Poinier's book is a welcome light shining guidance on a murky subject. His writing is engaging, witty and concise, making this the perfect read whether you freelance once in awhile or want to make it your career. Great, Sensible Guide to Setting Your Price
There's something about the way Jake Poinier approaches pricing in this book that just makes sense. Maybe it's the common-sense language, or the way he cuts through the fluff and gets right to the point. More likely it's how his personality just shines through every sentence that makes this book a must-have for every writer. You learn how to set prices, but you learn how to do it in a way that creates more harmony with your client and within yourself. It's one to have on your shelf and refer to often.
