The clip (the interior dimension of the hook) is about 1/2 inch in diameter and the opening is about 3/8 inch. Hope that helps. It is a good leash.

Q: What size is best for cats

While this is a wonderful leash for dog I would't consider it for a cat because is heavy. The nylon weight that make it so great for dogs, would not be comfortable for even a big size kitty. I think a 3/4 inches thickness would be more suitable, preferably one of those leash that stretch. As for the length I guess depends on the control you want. If I was to buy a leash for my cat I will do a search on cat product instead of adapting one made for dogs. I use this for obedience training my 45 pound puppy. So it should work for a small parrot.

Q: What is a good size for small dogs?

I'm guessing small means up to 15 lbs? I would order a 5 foot leash, 1/2 inch wide. My dogs are 32, 41 and 53 lbs. The two smaller dogs have a 3/4 inch, 5' lease and the heavier has a 1", 5 foot leash. Hope this helps.
