The part the eggs sit in (the bottom part), is BPA free. The plastic dome that covers the eggs, does have BPA. I do wish they would switch domes to a BPA free plastic, because the inside of the dome does get heated and it sweats a bit. Meaning, that sweat (with those chemicals in it), can and do, get on the eggs.

You do not have to fill all the holes. You can indeed just make a single egg.

Send it back. The measuring cup has the egg piercing pin on the bottom.

Q: will this cook grits or oatmeal?

I have not tired to make grits or oatmeal but it works perfect for soft, medium, and hard boiled eggs as well as poached, scrambled, and omelets
