Excellent, but mostly tailored to expert users.
This is the base model of a line of cheap, highly-functional routers that are differentiated almost completely by hardware, as the software (RouterOS) is pretty much universal across all of their routers. If there's a feature they can perform, Mikrotik will enable and exploit it. They're marketed as the smallest routers that support MPLS, an enterprise-grade traffic-agnostic protocol for traffic engineering, but this is the high-end tip of the iceberg. For most advanced users, these are attractive for their ability to be programmed to do almost anything from IPSEC and OpenVPN tunnels to traffic sniffing to link bonding to VRRP. They are extremely powerful, especially given their price and size, but the tradeoff is that, as mentioned, they cater towards advanced users in two ways. First is the interface, which has many options to modify the router's behavior that you would never get on even many other high-end routers or L2/L3/L4 switches. Second, is that while it is pretty well-documented on their Wiki, the writing is at a level that makes assumptions that the reader is well-versed in network engineering concepts and terminology. Even as an advanced administrator who has worked with Juniper and Cisco gear to get out of the most unforgiving of situations, I still had to experiment and use a few educated guesses as to how to go about doing some different setups, both standard and nontraditional, to see how far I could push these. While the Wiki won't always get you 100% of the way there, it does have a lot of interesting pages detailing the cool things you can do (port-knocking etc) and from these and an occasional blog post from MT users on the internet an advanced user can usually piece together the full setup. The basics are usually just accessed slightly unconventionally, but are pretty straightforward once you get used to them. Despite being quite comfortable with CLIs, I often find myself using the web interface as it's really quite good (though the look is a little utilitarian and the design language doesn't always tell you what you can click on to drill-down). You can set up scripts with their CLI language and have them run as cron jobs if you so desire as well. In fact, this is really a customized, embedded Linux box at its heart, so many features you'd expect on a basic linux install will be there in some form or another. I could go on, but for such a cheap price I'd suggest grabbing one yourself and working on it until it surprises you, because it certainly can.

Don't waste your money on anything else!
I have been looking for a solid, highly configurable router for a long time. I totally overlooked this brand many times and could kick myself in the face for it.Forget the $200 router at the store! Forget all the other brands. This IS the brand you should be using.I'm also a long time DD-WRT user and I must admit, this blows DD-WRT away. The interface is so configurable and fast. I can do 100x more with this than I ever could with DD-WRT.This is by far the BEST soho router I have ever purchased to date. It has countless features, it is extremely responsive, and the price is lower than many other name brands that only claim to offer better. The build quality is high, and the performance is rock solid. If you are one of those people looking for bandwidth/speed throttling per-ip address, STOP your search, RouterOS does it all and makes it easy. You can configure every IP address, IP range, port, interface, ect. with throttling by speed, time, days, and so on. It offers all the features of an expensive professional setup. The graphing and monitoring features of this product are worth the asking price alone. The only con of this model is the 100M ports. I accidentally ordered the wrong one and wanted the gigabit ports. I'm needing a little bit more so I'm gunna grab the RB2011UAS-2HND-IN. For the price, it is a steal. If you are not network savvy, this is not for you unless you are willing to put in some learning time. It's MUCH easier that people would think, but you need to understand the terms and how traffic flows in a network. You also need a firm understanding of TCP/IP. If you understand Cisco/Brocade, you can do this with your eyes closed.Words cannot express the value of this product. You'll be shocked. I was. I'm a dedicated fan now.

PLUG-N-PLAY router that boosted my internet speed by 30%
Router worked out of the box for a home cable modem->router system. No setup required. <update: I did have to set the date / time before it would work correctly with all my devices - log into the router and use System->Clock.>The Mikrotik replaced a TP-LINK TL-R860 and I was astonished to see an immediate speed increase. I didn't believe it, so I swapped the TP-LINK back in, ran SpeedTest then the Mikrotik and I saw a 30% increase in throughput. Admittedly the TP-LINK is a POJ but I never thought routers could change your internet speed so dramatically. The web-based interface is extensive, you can do a lot with this router obviously, and there is a desktop program (app) that lets you do the same. All I did was setup the network name and away it went. Looking forward to writing a script to kick my kid's off the internet after 8PM!

Great for troubleshooting and viewing what's hogging the bandwidth
The "torch" function which allows one to see in real time all the connections and bandwidth graphs going through an interface is what I like best about this router. If you have any interest in learning networking or want to troubleshoot, this is a wonderful tool. I recommend getting the more powerfull GL model for an extra 20 bucks. The leds on 750gl model flicker when traffic is flowing versus a steady green led light on the 750 model. This router can do a million different things and will keep you learning for years.

The real time traffic graphs alone are worth the money ...
The real time traffic graphs alone are worth the money. Beyond that, you have to be very familiar with networking and willing to dig through Mikrotik's online help and forums. I've had this for several months now and still haven't succeeded in getting any kind of VPN to work on it.

Not for average user
I use it for small business customers. It has features that you just don't find on consumer routers. ospf, bhp, mangle, custom scripting etc. It does not do WiFi it a 5 port wired router. although they have other models that do both.If you have used Mikrotik before then you know what I mean. but if you have not and aren't to into learning curves I would recommend a high end ASUS router instead.

There's a steep learning curve. However, there's plenty of online resources. Once you understand what this little bad boy is capable of you'll wonder why you've been paying so...
